this thread is to show how bikes, specialy folders, need some extracare about cable rubbing on frame, because its happens so much time what scrap paint off and expose your bike to corrosion/oxidation.

Brompton:

Brompton Have some parts you shoud extracare to protect as soo you got yous:

seatpost neck:
this part is a bare frame on brompton, not a removable part as in dahons bike, so it hight subject to wear and tear by constant open close motion of seatpost lever

tape it!


the seattube:
this part is smached agains cables and rear frame swing motion and always scrap paint out.
tape it!


the right chainstay under frontwheel catcher:
here the rubbing comes from frontwheel catcher sitting over the rear chainstay. this cause pait to peel out and infamous brompton corrosion to come

Dahon also suffer the same problems as show in brompton, and its more troublesome on cromoly models, as when the protective paint/powder comes of the corrosion/oxidation quicky come in.

dahon takes extra care about this subject and prior selling the bike patches many rubbing/contact points.

here is the example of 6 years heavy use os dahon speed p8 tripplebuttet cromoly on two costal cityes(Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro).

cable rubbing/ main hinge rubbing in main hinge area:

this area is critical, many itens moving and rubbing.
dahon put two pprotections but it is not sufficient.
here we put another cristal clear silicone to prevent furter damage

I use the same protective mixture on any exposed part of a frame and any component as on the chain. My impression is that it protects better than paint. It does not last as long as paint but not as long still may mean years. Incidentally your chain might use some treatment . The tape might peal the paint at some point.

I plan to use hammerite paint to touch up my corroded area. Anyone here used this type of paint?

hammerite is very nice for steel/cromoly base frames.
but it is just 1/3 of the way. its just stop rust, convert it to a paintable base layer.
so, for hammerit you should buy/use:

1) hammerite for deal with rust
2) steel protective paint, here in souther hemisphere we have spray cans for this exact propouse;
3) sealant go go over the paint to seal it and protect it from raw strap.

here we have this kind of product in hardware stores, 3 all in one spray can :

Ok thanks for the info. Looks like I need to do some searching for the paints. For me, I'm not to concerned with making it look pretty. Good enough for me if the rust is prevented/********.

If you can get the same kind/color of powder it's coated with ,

grinding it finer it can be a pigment in clear lacquer .. matching closely..

my main goal is the same as yours, make it last.
the hardest part to keep these steel/chromoly frames sane is the inner tubes.
i have 20 years old brompton witch is badly corroded inside the frame tubes.
i tried many stuff to throw inside the frame to kill the rust but it keeps coming back.
so once in year i revamp the coating, protection inside and ouside the frames.
if the bike survive for more 10 years it will be amazing.
i have serius doubt how a brompton can survive in frozen shores like new york, where pll dump salt in streets...even cars gets better up in northeast usa.

I put helicopter tape on rub points. Been doing it for decades on all my bikes. Works fine and never had any issues removing (along with a hair dryer). For used bikes, I'm a big fan of black bikes, lol. Easy to repair with some black Rustoleum brand appliance paint. And each bike gets a treatment of Frame Saver, of course.

That's one of the benefits of a forum like this one - I learned about helicopter tape from someone else who learned from someone else. When removing, use heat and then rub with some WD40 to get off any residual sticky. Works great. It's also great for taping cables that get rubbed from folding on a folder to prevent premature housing wear.

Having recently heard of Helicopter tape from linberl, I pressed the magic button to summon the postman to my front door. He will be delivering me a sliver of tape via slow boat from China. Have no idea whether China manufactures helicopters, but they do, do tape.

I usually put a bit of electrical tape on the frame where cables want to rub. Occasionally I notice the tape is worn through, then I replace it. If I have a wear spot down to bare metal, I use a bit of fingernail polish to touch of the spot so it does not oxidize. Fingernail polish because it is available in a wide variety of colors and has a convenient little brush in the cap so you can do a touch up in a minute or two. But do not do the work where you would be upset about a drip coming off the brush. Wear spots on bicycles are quite normal.
