my trip to Romania..
I just got back from my sailing trip in the lake in Romania.
I was in the village of Jurilovcaand we sailed the entire lake with little boats.
If you wish to see all the pictures they are here.
raid romania 2012
as for bicycles...this is a town where time forgot, russian bicycles and an interesting visit to the hardware shop got me a new leather seat for about 7 dollars.
now i understand what the hubs are for!

Romania, that's off the beaten path.
edit: Checked the map again, your "lake" is attached to the Black Sea.
Did I read (a couple of years back) that the Black Sea is terribly polluted? Russians were avoiding beach resorts in Odessa and Sevastopol, not eating fish, etc.

I believe it is hemp, seems to be in every runnoff ditch on the side of the road. possibly they planted it for crop sometimes and it went wild.

Hello, yes we love beer in plastic bottle! "Noroc" is a cheap brand.
Those bike`s are made in Ukraine, HVZ factory, in the 80`. Very heavy, very simple and very strong.

Of course we could grow it here in the US and make our own fiber/rope/fabric/paper/twine, but US officials insist on confusing hemp with cannabis.

Hey, thanks for posting your photos. Those pictures of steel hubs used as bow rollers are brilliant - I need a similar set-up on my old fibreglass clinker fishing tub. The genuine parts are expensive, but I've got a box of old steel hubs I was going to throw away - guess what I'll be doing this weekend?

nice photos. i'd like to visit romania sometime. looks like beautiful country, and maybe i could find a cheap, new saddle and a short, young bride with a crew cut that's an exceptionally gifted gymnast. one can dream.
in related news, anyone know where nadia comaneci now resides? that's right, that strange, little, prideful, xenophobic state of oklahoma. boomer sooner.

My Dad rode all the way across Romania during a solo bike tour in 1988 or so--rode from the west of Ireland to the Russian border, camping out all the way. He was the bike tourist supreme, a genuinely humble guy--I always thought the US State Department should have hired him as an ambassador of goodwill to dispel the conventional view of the ugly American. Thanks for the photos!
