Want 4,000 bikes cheap?

First off, let me just say that I have no affiliation with this hoarder, er uhm, person. I'm not going to post the link as I don't want to bend/break any rules.

I was browsing my local Craig's List today when I stumbled upon THIS ...
(I think this guy may have a bit of a problem)

That reminds me of this, only on a larger scale. Taken in Pringle, SD. The bikes are next to the Mickelson Trail. There are more, but I couldn't them in the shot.

I'm thinking bike theft rather than hoarding. Part of Igor Kenk's collection in Toronto.

+1 on the bike theif

I saw something very similar on our local news and it was a thief's house.

I would be surprised. It is possible but looking at it, most of them look lower end and probably are mostly stolen. What would someone be doing with that many bikes just piled on top of each other like that without something sketchy.

And imagine the hundreds of turds you have to dig through to find them! And the rust that's on those gems from being stored outdoors in heaps!

I bet he has less than 100 bikes out of his 4000 that are worth more than $100 each. The rest aren't worth more than scrap.

Why would anyone steel that many crappy kids bikes? After doing 30 seconds of research, it would be obvious they aren't worth anything. Why risk getting caught for something that isn't worth 2 nickels?

I guess I just don't understand thieves.

They're not stolen, they're garbage picked. Anyone who goes g-picking knows that the vast majority are department store bikes... and not worth much. Any bike shop models would likely not be tossed in these outside piles, but kept indoors or sold asap.

I agree, it is probably just freebies that someone has picked up.

Note the large number of 16" and 20" kids bikes. Probably ridden till the tires went flat and the kid outgrew them, then thrown out.

I'm not sure which is more disturbing, someone who steals 4,000 crappy bikes or someone who hoards 4,000 crappy bikes just to let them sit out in the rain and become even more worthless.

My parents were depression era kids so they had a big problem with hoarding. I just don't get it. When my mom died she had about 200 pair of shoes stashed in closets around the house. Then there was a trash can full of old yard shoes in the garage that she couldn't part with. It's a sickness.

I could imagine some of the police auctions plowing through those hordes of stolen bikes (for the ones with stolen bikes)

A few gems might stand out... but otherwise I could imagine a dozen bikes piled together for $1.

Or, more likely, someone will go through and sort them out. Put one gem into every batch of junk, so to get your Eddy Merckx, you'll have to also buy a dozen Huffys.

Fort Worth used to have a business called Patton Bike Shop that looked a lot like this. They had been in business forever and you could find just about any part you needed if you had the patience. It was like an auto junkyard except for bikes. They sold a few new parts and they were great fun to visit. When the owner died the scrap metal dealers got a windfall and the bicycle nuts lost a resource.

Wallymart prices their bikes just low enough & their spare parts just high enough that it doesn't make economic sense for most consumers to bother repairing an old Murray or Roadmaster. I see these things tossed out by the side of the road all the time. Not really worth the time to stop & pick up. Hopefully they find their way into the steel recycling stream instead of the county dump.
