Riding a lot of km at speed denounce any potential areas for rubbing/chafing, and I've never had any problems.
Unless you cast getting dressed for a pre-work ride and forgetting to put underwear in your bag.... currently wearing running shorts under my dress!!!
I forgot my whole suit once. I had to nip to the local shops and buy a dark skirt and a white blouse. Lucky it was hot or I'd have had to fork out for a jacket I didn't need as well

Nylon running shorts. If it's cool, I wear tights under them. Neither commando nor underwear. Nylon dries really quickly and is very light. Only need 1 pair.

Long undies makes sense to protect against cool nights but even in hot weather might also prevent stinking up the sleeping bag?

I wear cycling shorts around the clock when on a bike trip. I don't waste my time changing clothes other than once every couple of days so I clean the shorts out in sink somewhere. I sleep in them and bike in them. Saves weight and pack space.

Every day a winding road
Very uncomfortable to be wearing bike shorts day in and day out. No were near worth it to save a few ounces imho.

I find cycling shorts uncomfortable when not riding. I'll bring a skirt to change under if I expect there won't be a "proper " place to change. or just wear the skirt. Handy for times like driving to a day ride, long break, not setting my tent up yet, others.
