Hwy 410 closed but seemingly rideable

Hwy 410 into Mt Rainier iis closed but I rode beyond the 'road closed' barriers and had an empty road beyond the White River campground entrance. Dot.wa.gov says the road work runs til June 11th. I need to try to get to Sunrise lodge (if possible) on a weekend.

edit: Crystal Mt will not be opening the gondola for summer operations until late June, so that road has few cars&trucks. 6 miles, ~1500' elevation gain, constant grade.

Sounds good, but

I would be worried about an expensive citation if I went around a "road closed" sign.

Ya just gotta 'good old boy' with the Ranger.

Got turned around twice - by the Rangers - trying to get from Paradise to Ohanapecosh (?) two days ago, once after the road crews had all left for the day. Opens Friday, i missed an epic climb by 3 days. Same in Gifford Pinchot forest as 23 + 25 are closed but you can go higher, late in the day after crews knock-off. This is the best time of year, no cars on some mountain roads and magnificent mountain roads.

I think this is one of those 'better to ask for forgiveness than for permission' situations. Have ridden past lots of road closed signs and the worst that's happened is that I was asked to turn back (which I did). Many times it turned out that one could get through fine on a bicycle although it might have been dangerous or impossible by car.

I have a collection of "Road Closed" signs with my bike, right before I rode past them. Generally, those signs are for cars not bikes.

@Wildwood Fantastic photos! Thanks for posting them, and for the tip. Was the second one from the approach to Chinook Pass, or somewhere else?

FS 25 & 23 leave from Randle heading south, between Mt St Helens and Mt Adams. Both still snow closed.

Thanks for the info, @Wildwood. I haven't been down that way since I moved up here a lifetime ago. Looks gorgeous!

Thanks for the update @Wildwood! Depending on how close they are opening, which is usually 2-3 weeks away, they normally let cyclists beyond road closure signs. Sunrise is an example and even on the website they state its open to pedestrian (ie cyclist) traffic. Might have to get up there once we get warmer sunnier days soon before they open!!

Well, you can definitely ride to the top of Sunrise on weekends car-free until opening. Visitors Center (above) is still completely surrounded by snow.
As of last Sat (6/2), there are some rocks in the road, snow melt across the road near the top, but it's a great ride if the weather cooperates. I rode from the parking lot at the bottom of Crystal Mt. Road = 20miles to Sunrise Lodge. You can park at the White River campground (at least you could on 6/2) which is the car free last 10miles. Very warm climbing, later in the day descending was comfortable with a windbreaker.

Thanks again for another update! Weather this weekend(6/9 - 6/10) won't cooperate but I'm hoping next week will. Going to try to get out mid-week and check it out.

Here's a link with some road update info...
