Old Guy From MGM

Well, MGM as in the airport code for Montgomery AL. I haven't ridden in a long time, but I do have the last bike I rode from almost 30 years ago. It's a Huffy 626 12 speed. It's kind of sad looking right now, but the white and black paint is in fair condition (couple of chips, but nothing down to bare metal) and some bad decals and lots of crud. I got tired of just looking at it in the outside storage building, so I'm gathering some bike-unique tools and parts and start cleaning it up.

I was able to pull the wheels and take the dry-rotted tires off this afternoon. The 6 gear Suntour freewheel has some surface rust and is noisy, but after a few shots of WD40 spins freely and doesn't rock. It'll need some bearing work - grease at the least and a really good scrubbing. The rear wheel seems to be O.K., but the front has a lot of rust inside and out. I'll check the rear more closely after a deeper clean.

I have some new cables and brake pads, and am sure the parts list will grow.

O.K., it's a Huffy, I know, and not particularly valuable or rare. But it's my Huffy and I want to get it back into riding condition. The riding part will be very important to my newly repaired ticker - and losing some more pounds - and will give another choice for movement and exercise. So I'm looking forward to this adventure.

I'm sure there will be one or two or a thousand questions, so see you around the forums!

John

Welcome John!

The Huffy will be just fine in getting started again. But go slow dont' over do it. Your ticker has to get used to things as well as the rest of your body. Happy riding!

Welcome to Bike Forums from a 73 y/o rider in west central Florida. Glad you're getting back at it. Stop by the Southeast Regional subforum and say hello. We have quite a few Alabama folks on here. Have fun.

Welcome John. Cleaning and fixing up bikes is part of the fun. You get pride from it and satisfaction that you can repair things if you have problems on the road.
