Fair offer on this 86 trek 760?

Its a bit rough (rust on headset/screws/frame) Has a replaced rear wheel, as far as I can tell. Seller looking for 225, I think a bit high for condition. Ill try to add foto's now....

Thank you for opinions offered. It will be a rider for me to rebuild. Not a flip. My size

It never ceases to maze me how lazy people are. First dump the track bar. Second clean the damn bike and make it presentable. It would be worth that price with matching wheels. Why are the wheels mismatched?
Looks like a storage find to me. And why is the asking price $225? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Tre...AAAOSwZR9ahJGM Can you pick the bike up locally?
I would move on. I know the 760 is desirable, but still.......You are buying the frame essentially.
And check completed Ebay listings. He's been trying to sell it with no takers. Florida.......

Yes, pics are from ebay/being sold locally. Im about to offer. I dont need the ti bars or pedals (not his prob) but I dont want to appear to lowball him either. Frame is desireable; being 531 and my size. Frameset worth then? Thank you for the reply

I can't tell what the parts are from the pics. The bike has rust issues but these can be dealt with. I'd offer $175 or so but the price is not out of line for a full reynolds 531 bike in reasonable shape (it won't be a huge job getting the bike road ready).

50-100 bucks is a lot more sane. If it were in perfect shape then it could get more but it looks to be pulled out of a dumpster lol

The frame is worth more than $50. Probably around $100 alone.

Yeah, it's not presentable now, but if I wanted it for myself I am going to break it down and rebuild it anyway. If he wants $225 offer $150 and see if you get a good counter offer.

Frame is probably the only thing of value and would sell for more if he took the other stuff off first, but the guy is asking for an unreasonable amount. Even if it were in perfect shape there is still depreciation, but even the frame does not look that good. Whole thing literally looks like it came out of a dumpster.

There is a guy in another thread buying titanium frame for 260 bucks, for comparison. You could likely just post "I want a 531 frame" on the board and get a pristine one for less than this guy wants. I probably would not even bother with this guy, another delusional ebay seller, but if I did anything it would be to offer 50 bucks and see if he came to his senses.

For a reynolds 531 frameset in fairly decent shape with a bunch of parts thrown in? I've gotten one or two deals like that but those don't come around often and that's below FMV.

The bike has rust issues but it does not look like it came from a dumpster. This is a low temperature silver brazed frameset with investment cast lugs. The bike came with a good mix of specialized and suntour parts. That looks like a good quality specialized crank and that could be the original superbe derailleurs matched to suntour spring shifters. Heck those could mainly be original parts that just need a bit of TLC and evapo rust to spiff them up. Mismatched wheels are a drag but frankly wheels on old bikes tend to be a problem.

Hard to tell what the parts are from the pics and the rust is a downer but it's not terrible and can be dealt with.

I don't think it's in that good of shape though, there is not one inch of that frame with no rust or bubbling. Maybe I am wrong but I think you would be really paying for trek name more than anything on this one, and I don't think that alone is worth much.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Schwinn-Pel...gAAOSwODFaa5DC

Reynolds 853 (better than 531) steel frame looks brand new. 195 plus 75 shipping.

I don't know exactly where in florida the OP is, but in places like LA there will be centurion le mans for 150 bucks all the time.

Anyways, it is OP's opinion who matters. Don't let me steer you in a direction you think is wrong if this will make you happy.

No, the trek is not in great shape, but it's not rusting and bubbling all over the place. And the Trek is like 47cm to 50cm or so -- a very small frame. Decent bikes in those small sies are not easy to find.

If this small frame is what you want, then the price is good. I’m seeing a Superbe rear derailleur which makes me believe it may have all the original Superbe pieces on it. You probably have $150 of group and wheels which nets a nicely priced 760 frame. Condition is on the rough side but still not bad for the price. FWIW, I paid more than this total price for a VGC 760 frameset-only on this very forum.

He didn't post a link, and I'm puzzled how publicizing the bike here would lead to it selling for under the asking price anyway.

I dont think forum members rain on others parades/but thats just me. We're having monsoons here this month, so tear down will have to wait. He had it all boxed up for shipping, so it sits in my shed in its cacoone.

Trek listed these as xs short wheelbase 18.5 inch frame noteworthy as being the smallest 700c wheeled frame made actually a bit smaller than a standard 47cm. As for value I would say the original ask of $225 was reasonable if you need this size frame and like the color there just aren't a lot of frame sets of this size and quality out there.

To follow up/ I released it from its box. Turns out to be a 19.5" frame (50cm). I does indeed have a specialized crank. The front dr is a superbe, but the rear is a suntour 5000 with accushift levers. Dirty as it is; I'm satisfied that I bought at least 150 in parts. Unsure weather to harvest it or refurbish. Thanks for all the comments. BTW-the trek site puts the serial # as 10th frame of 24 made that year for the 19" size. Surely there were more than 24 made, no? Seems a small number.

Wanted to update this purchase/but with the new format, I can't find how to start a new post
The bb wasn't really bad at all compared to the cosmetics of the thing. Managed to recable the rdr on the first try!
Now I will try to upload photos.
