Showering right after ride?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Showering right after ride?

So I've been diving into the shower right after a good ride, however my mom says that I'll kill myself by doing so and that it's bad for your health.

So... is it bad to just jump straight in the water right after your ride?

I think diving into the shower is a bad idea no matter how closely it follows your ride.

Well, apparently it has something to do with letting the sweat glands cool down after exercise... or blood flow or something?

Anyone have any knowledge on this?

I believe this is possible but the water has to be really cold I have heard. It can cause a kind of shock. If the water isn't cold though I have not heard of anything that could even remotely spell out shower=death.

well if you take fast enough showers, you will continue sweating after your shower is over

Those Swedes go from the suana to the nearly frozen lakes in the winter, they don't die.

I think it is best to cool down a bit after a ride, I dont even like to go into the air conditioning right after I get back form a ride. I like to do a check of my bike, maybe wipe it down, check the brakes, ect... that way I can just top off the tire pressure and its ready to go.

I could see a problem with jumping in a hot tub right after a ride, or a very hot shower, but I dont know anyone who would want to do that. maybe she is thinking that hot muscles + cold water = cramping?

My suggestion... ride, check the bike, grab a snack, shower.
10 minuets between bike and shower should be more than enough.

"showering" wont make you go blind BTW...

Depends on the extremes. As a kid I would mow a large yard in 110F+ temps. Once I made the mistake of jumping into an ice cold shower because I was overheating. The shock was such that I could not breathe for a min or two.
Of course, you have to be an idiot to do that.

I heard you're not suppose to drink water on long rides because the temperature differential on a hot day can kill you.

Yeah but that's only for really really really cold water...though I can't seem to figure out how to keep my water really really really cold on a long hot ride...guess I'm safe.
