Creative suggestions for loaner bike while in the shop
So, I've got this ancient hybrid I commute on daily. I could buy a new bike, but this one works fine. But it's a bit rusty, and the years have taken its toll on the paint, etc. So I was thinking of fixing this one up a bit, a few new components, some powdercoating...
But I don't want to stop riding to work, and powdercoating turnaround is like a week at least. I don't really want another bike; this one works great for the commuting and weekend family rides I do and I don't have unlimited space. The way I see it, I can:
1. Just buy another bike and deal. [I'd rather not]
2. Drive [I'd rather not]
3. Buy a used bike and sell it again [tempting, but a hassle to resell]
4. Rent a bike [probably pricey for a few weeks, and don't want to hurt the rental]
5. Borrow a bike [This would be great but I don't know someone with a spare]
Any other creative suggestions? I am continually amazed that I can't get my bike serviced while I wait like I can (for minor service) for my car. Maybe I should have a second bike around for reduncancy--funny how car drivers don't need a backup car.

Buy another bike. It's good to have a bike backup when you've got a bike addiction. I've got 4 backups and I'm not completely certain that's enough.

+1 look for a second bike....maybe different from what you have now....road bike for the weekend, a folder for convenience or a unicycle just because
the backup is good...and it is interesting to compare bikes

Can't hurt to have a backup steed in your stable. Keep your current beast, too, and don't make it too pretty. "ugly" rusty bikes are less of a target for scumbag thieves, I'm guessing.

If it's a place that specializes in bike stuff, you can always puppy-face it and tell them that it's your commuter and ask if they can do it then and there.
