Indoor Trainers

So today was the first day to break out the indoor trainer for the winter. I forgot how bored I get on this thing. I spent an hour doing a variety of climbing, and fast flats with tension. Needless to say I was drenched with sweat, and it was a great workout, but it took every ounce of mental energy to not want to quit simply due to bordom. What do you guys do to get through a trainer workout? How many use the videos? I have the video that came with the trainer, but haven't watched/riden to it yet. Are they interesting to follow along with? Other than my I-pod, I need something else to pass the time, otherwise, the motivation to train has potential of quickly going away....help!!

I watch Hulu or DVDs, listen to NPR or my iPod. My cats cheer me on, too.

I used to use structured workouts that had constant gear and cadence changes, so you had to concentrate a bit. Or you can watch TV and sprint during commercials....
A fan of some sort is almost a necessity, I found.

Bottom line is....Trainer workouts are boring.

You live in Charlotte! Put a vest on and hit the road.
I am still convinced that trainers suck the soul out of roadies. Especially that first ride of the year.

I use training MP3's on my Ipod. Not that expensive to buy and some are actually pretty good motivators.

Nothing beats the road and living in a pretty temperate climate, I know where I would be.

You're riding the trainer? It's about 12 degrees warmer there than here.

When I do ride inside I watch Tour DVDs or Netflix movies or hulu.
Riding inside would be an awful way to die.

I did almost 2.5 hours last night on the trainer and I stopped only because I had to get up at 6:30 for work (and I can't sleep for an hour or two after I stop riding). The wife came down and reminded me of the time.

Bike DVD/tapes, with low sound, for visuals. Yesterday was a Best Motoring DVD (cars) and the 98 Liege (partial). Usually I put in just bike things, but Netflix delivered the DVD so I watched it almost 3x while on the bike.

MP3s with ear buds, not too loud, for rhythm/pace.

Focus on form of all kinds. Pedaling form. Position on bike. Aero.

Focus on work done. HR, power, cadence, gears.

Think about your goals for next year.

I regularly do 1-1.5 hour rides throughout the year on the trainer, and in the winter they typically stretch into 2-5 hour rides.

One time when I was much younger I decided to ride the rollers for the 2nd half of a pro football game (Dolphins and I think San Diego) on TV. Went to more than 1 overtime. I could hardly walk when it was over.

Clipping in, and pedaling with one foot at a time breaks up the tedium a little. Not enough, but it helps. My trainer is probably going to remain in storage.

While yes, I do live in Chlt and the weather during the day is just fine for a ride, I have to get my rides in @ 4:30am if I want to ride at all. Its been in the low 40's, which is below my threshold, plus it has been raining lately I at least want to ride even if it is a trainer. I'm going to try the video/music route and hopefully winter won't last too long..
