How long does a newly built wheel keep in storage?

How long does a newly built wheel keep in storage?
I would like to have a few wheels built on some rims and hubs I've collected. I may rotate them every 6 months or so or I may not. How long will they last without being used once I get them back from the wheel builder? Will they stay perfectly fine for a few years even in the event I never get around to rotating them into use?

As far as the rims and spokes, if it's built right, they'll last forever.
The bigger problem is likely to be the grease in the hubs will dry out if you leave them sitting for a very long time. After several years, you might want to repack the bearings (if possible) or drip a few drops of light oil into sealed bearings.

worse case scenario, just check the true & tension before switching out the rims.

If a wheel is built properly with high, even tension you'll should not need to touch them for the life of the rim. At worst, a well-built wheel will require minor touch-up after the first couple rides.
I've built wheels that did not require re-truing for years. I rebuilt them when the rims wore through on the brake track. Now that my main ride has disk brakes I expect they'll outlive Keith Richards.
