Not sure where to post this...kinda embarrassing

I rode 65 miles the other day (long for me) and developed a bump under my skin about where my sit bone is. It is about 250mm x 50mm. There is no discoloration or mark on the skin. I stayed off the bike for several days and tried to ride last night. OUCH

No abrasion or skin irritation to treat. Same saddle I have used for years.

Any thoughts on how to make this go away?

I'm having a hard visualizing this. First, where your sit bone contacts the saddle isn't that big. Second, a bump without discoloration or marking? Not even a bruise?


It might be better to get medical advice from a medical professional than from us random strangers on the internet.

You have my sympathy: I suffered from something similar for years and, in fact, switched to a recumbent bike for quite a few years. I didn't find any product totally effective but one that worked pretty well was Sudocrem. You probably have something similar by a different name in the US but this link will show you what's in it.

Weirdly it seems to have suddenly stopped being an issue for me, thank goodness, as I've moved to a new area which means that the recumbent isn't a very suitable choice any more. If you don't use a chamois cream then I'd also suggest you think about that. I've used Assos chamois cream for years.

I don't know the cause of the bump in your butt. That is the perfect area for a bacterial infection. Perhaps there was a minute break in the skin from the constant movement and contact with the saddle. I've had a similar bump but closer to the center line that eventually went away with daily cleaning and antibiotic cream. These days i make an effort to maintain the area very clean and do a scrub before a ride and a shower after. I wash bike shorts the instant I return home from a ride as bike shorts are a perfect environment for bacteria. Good luck.

My best guess is that it could be pressure related. Try swapping the saddle out for a gel one. If that doesn't solve the problem, I would recommend seeing a doctor and go from there.

It sounds like a furuncle (AKA boil) or possibly a collection of furuncles known as a carbuncle, although lack of skin discoloration makes me wonder.
If it is a furuncle or carbuncle then it will likely get red and erupt soon enough. Keep it clean and treat it like any other wound or infection. You may want to go to the doctor to have it lanced and drained.

I have had them a few times but now pay particular attention to hygiene and reducing friction - use shorts with a high quality chamois and use Body Glide, wash garments thoroughly after every ride and shower after every ride.

Though I agree with others, 2" X 10" is the mother of all saddle sores!

Sorry I'm no help with the sore. If it was raw or broken or even surface irritation/inflammation, as a typical saddle sore, I'd suggest some type of zinc cream.

Usually what you have is a boil. It can take some time for it to grow a head and become obvious. The best way to treat it is usually to apply heat such as an old fashion hot water bag to it often. This will increase blood flow to the area and bring it to the surface.

There are several other things this could be such as a bruised muscle etc. but these sorts of things should be diagnosed by doctors and not some Internet idiot like me.

OP here...F-ing metric system. Yes I meant 1/4 inch x 1-1/2 inch. Deep under the skin and no outward sign. Feels like a lump you get when you hit your head. Only hurts if I get on a bike. I'll go to the doctor if it hasn't gotten better by Monday.

Deep inflammatory issue. Could have started from a pimple or not. Could be evolving boil. May resolve over time on its own. May try soaking with epsom salt. Or could be injected with steroid to knock it down.

I vote for "see a doctor." I had one, became infected, MRSA no less. Started me on an antibiotic but a lab test determined mine was resistant to the initial med and changed it. I wouldn't fool with it, that's what doctors are for.
