Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike rack on Jeep idea?

Hey guys. I was wondering if this would be a safe way to haul my roadie.
Not my picture, but thinking about doing this for the summer. Basically attaching a fork bracket to the roll bar and securing down the rear. Thoughts?

Blech. Can't put on the top, *and* have the ability to trash the bike going into the garage.

Just put a hitch receiver on it, then get a bike rack that plugs into the receiver.
That is what I did for my Wrangler.

Your usual Jeep bike rack mount is using the back of the spare wheel..

I've had a couple CJs, and fietsbob is right, spare tire mount racks are the best. They swing out with the wheel gate if you have one. Hitch rack is a waste of metal, and block rear access. I bought an old used one for like $10 back in the day. Find one on CL if you can. No need for it to be fancy.

Oh, and roof rack/garage danger is only a problem if you're not paying attention. You generally take the bikes off the roof first. I've never gone under something too low for my roof rack (on my 4Runner or my TSX), in 15 years of driving with that setup.

I made my own bike rack. It has a lot of Jeep ingenuity (velcro, bungee cords, etc.), but it works great. Bikes stay put, rack stays put, even on 3+ hr rides home on bumpy NY highways.

So when you get a flat, you'll just use one of the bike wheels?

When you have E-range, 10 ply tires, you don't get flats.
