Under Desk Cycling and Cycling Performance

Hi all,

First time poster, and I wanted some thoughts regarding an under desk cycle. I'm limited to how much I can ride during the week, to at most, 8 hours. I'd like to be able to add Zone 2 time during the week, and I'm wondering if an under desk cycle could fit that need. Ultimately, I'd like to increase my FTP. I work in an office, mostly sedentary, but I have opportunities at my desk to do cycling. I'm just curious if any of you have had experience with this, and has it helped?

Thanks.

the amount of dB should be heavily thought about when picking one out.

I have used one as a test mule at home prior to taking out on the road for such "on the spot" cardio. I didn't expect it to be a "transformation" in cardio health, which my expectations held true & it went back within it's trial time window. It was kinda loud when used near another audio producing device.

My wife had one but the crank arms were too small to be of much use. We gave it to her mother who is old and has respiratory problems and doesn't get out much. She found it hard. I can't imagine the OP would get much use out of it.

Yes, I was thinking about something like you posted, Glenn. Just figuring out how to add time to my week.

You might be better off with a balance ball, it will help with your core.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'd have a hard time maintaining zone 2 for any length of time without working up a sweat. It might work in a call center (except for the racket), but damp exercise clothes wouldn't go over well in my cube. And dripping wet office casual isn't comfortable.

Any physical exercise you do to get the blood flowing and HR going a little faster is good.

Even when I got my first new store bought bike back in late 60's or very early 70's, the owner of the local Schwinn bicycle shop stressed that just moving your legs up and down on the pedals in an easy gear for a long time was better for cardio health than trying to push a big gear then getting worn out and stopping after a few minutes.

If you just stuck a crankshaft with pedals under your desk and pedaled with no resistance for the entire day, you'll be far up on your cube mates that do nothing.

FTP stands for functional threshold power. FTP is the highest power that a rider can maintain in a quasi-steady state without fatiguing for approximately one hour. When power exceeds FTP, fatigue will occur much sooner, whereas power just below FTP can be maintained considerably longer. https://wattmatters.blog/home/2018/6/5/wtf-is-ftp

I have serious doubts that this under desk thing will result in any improvement of FTP. But, give it a try.
