Biking from Fisherman's Wharf to Carmel
Hi,
I am planning on biking the coastline from San Francisco to Carmel. I plan on doing
Day 1-SF-Half Moon Bay
Day 2 HMB-Santa Cruz
Day 3 Santa Cruz to Carmel
Has anyone ever done this? Any advice? I plan on taking Highway 1 most of the way.

I have done it, but a long time ago. The is a stretch of Hwy 1 from about Santa Cruz to Watsonville where Hwy 1 is actually a freeway and you cannot ride it. You need to ride the frontage roads out by the ocean. Get a good map.

Get "Cycling the Pacific Coast" by Bill Thorness, published by Mountaineers Books. It's a bit of overkill for your purpose (it covers the coast route all the way from Canada to Mexico) and it's a bit spendy ($25) but it will have turn-by-turn directions and other good info for exactly the trip you want to do. Another good option is "Bicycling the Pacific Coast" by Vicky Spring and Tom Kirkendall. also from Mountaineer Books, but the one I have of that is older than Thorness' book (2005 v. 2017) and Thorness' maps are a little more detailed.
To go from Monterey to Carmel, be sure to go via the coast/17 Mile Drive route, not the more direct route paralleling Hwy 1. The coast route is longer, but hasl ess climbing and (more important) incredible, world-class scenery. Don't event think of riding to Carmel and skipping the coastal part of the 17 Mile Drive. Trust me on that.

I've biked from Santa Cruz to Monterey, and will echo the point above; You can't ride Hwy 1 all the way between the 2, and nor would you want to.
It is, surprisingly enough, a little more complicated than "keep the water on your right" to get through, but it's a beautiful ride. Enjoy!

Hi, did you do it? I recently biked from the Santa Cruz area to Carmel. We took San Andreas Rd, Elkhorn Rd, Molera, Monte, the the bike path, and of course 17 mile drive (as others already wrote).
