Wolverine Build: Tiagra + XT

Looking to build a Wolverine Soma on the cheap. Can I put together Tiagra shifters + XT drive train? What brakes should I get? I need shopping links!

Or maybe this older Ultegra kit?

I think with the old Shimano 9 speed stuff road/mountain shifters/derailleurs work together.

Which tiagra? I believe Tiagra 4700 uses a different pull ratio than earlier shimano 10 speed stuff. In any case, Check out the Wolf Tooth Tanpan. It’s a pulley adapter that changes a pull ratio so road shifters work with MTB derailers. I believe they make one that converts 4700 tiagra shifters to the pull needed for newer XT derailers, check Wolf Tooth’s site.

Well tiagra is 10 speed so unless you have a very old xt rd it's not going to work.

Just use a Tiagra rear derailleur and a Wolftooth roadlink. It's good for up to a 42t rear cog. HG-500 11-42 shimano 10spd cassette is around $35.

What are you trying to achieve by mixing Tiagra with XT parts? Road shifters have a different pull ratio than MTB derailleurs. Like wheelsmcgee suggested, Wolf Tooth Tanpan will adjust for the difference.

If you want to make a 1x setup, Tiagra derailleurs also come in medium cages if you want a use a wide range cassette.

Go with Gevenalle for shifters. The Tanpan will probably give you the ability to run a larger cassette.

Shimano 9 speed Deore derailleurs can be mixed with most Shimano 10 speed STI brifters except Tiagra 4700 ten speed. Any 105 or Ultegra 10 speed shifters will work with the Deore RD-M591 rear derailleur. The M591 can take a 36 tooth cog on a cassette and works great on 10 speed systems.

Deore 10 speed is not compatible with Shimano road shifters, including any Tiagra, 105, Ultegra...

Going with mechanical disc brakes will save you money. Also consider the TRP HY/DR hybrid mechanical/hydraulic brakes if you want the benefits of hydraulic disc brakes without the cost and installation headaches.

Be sure to invest in tubeless rims and tires. You will regret using tubes on gravel.
