It wouldn't surprise me if they stuck plutonium up their nostrils.

Supplement woo at the TdF.
Well, sports is one of the biggest venues for snake-oil as people will take/do anything to get an edge.

Banned.
Some teams are spending as much as 100,000 at the TDF just on this stuff. Around $40 for one bottle.

I think I will have a nice glass of acetone with my breakfast today.
Acetone: It's a universal solvent, nail polish remover, and nutritional supplement. What could possibly go wrong?

Ketones are the product of lipolysis, i.e. fat burning, and are the other molecule besides glucose that provide energy to our cells. Nutritional ketosis is very different from ketoacidosis. Btw I’ve lost 50 lbs. on Keto. All that said, ketone supplements seem like a waste of body fat burning potential to someone like me trying to lose weight!

Only research I came across involved testing mice and rats. Could not find info on human test subjects.
I think I will take a pass on this elixir.

If I recall correctly, once sugar is depleted for fuel, the body starts to burn fat and will continue to do so until carbs/sugars are once again introduced into the system. While sugar provides quick bursts of energy, fat burning offers longer, more linear energy. So a sprinter may benefit from sugar based energy, a marathon runner would do better burning fat, aka ketosis.
Many low carb/carb free diets are out there and they do work very well at losing weight by switching the body into fat burning ketosis.
I'm not sure when this switch happened in human evolution, but somewhere man became a better shopper than hunter.

Acetone in the water bottle?
Actually, there are apparently only about 3 natural keytone bodies, I think, of which Acetone is the most common industrial chemical.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketone_bodies
It looks like benefits may be mixed, although one might look at cycling specific.
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/319742.php
In particular, cycling has weight loss, and high intensity aerobic activity... in which one could easily exhaust glucose reserves.
Reading about toxicity, I think the acetone toxicity is relatively low, primarily irritation. Mental changes and intoxication?
Although, like with alcohol, it is possible to overdose.
I don't think I'll be trying it any time soon. If one does choose to make one's own drinks, verify the purity of the chemical, and probably mix it with something that would make it more palatable like grape juice.

It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature. But it doesn't seem to matter in pro sports-anything goes to get an edge, even if there's a chance it will be found harmful on down the road. No thanks.

Carbohydrates are the No. 1 Performance Enhancing Substance used during the Tour. Ketones no different just produced differently. Whats the difference from popping a sugar gel or taking exogenous ketones?

No idea if the performance enhancing is for real or not, but the theory suggests this could be really dangerous. Basically, the idea is that the muscles will burn the ketones first and then the carbs. This is also true of alcohol, and what happens to the carbs that don't get used is they get converted to fat by the liver. If you do too much drinking on a regular basis, you can get fatty liver or worse because of this.
I don't think anyone's going to be able to say combining ketones with abundant carbs over anything but a very short term is safe because this just isn't something that would happen by itself.

The info came out that Jumbo was using it at this years tour. They've had 3 winners so far so there might be something to it. Rumors are that Sky was using it last year.
FYI, Lance has talked about it on his podcast and all he says it does work. Aids in faster recovery. So, if anyone would know about performance enhancing products, look no further.

Supposedly, it was developed by the U.S. Military. It has been around in various forms for 15 years. I guess it does not taste good at all or at least the early stuff was beyond horrible but they have solved some of that and the cost has come way down. As a previous poster stated, it is around 30-40 a pop now.

All industries spend huge sums to get athletic stars seen or talking about their products, no matter how poor or fraudulent they are. Take Beats headphones (seen on every NCAA/NFL etc player's head walking into the stadium on game day), or "CopperFIT" clothing with ads starring Brett Favre (Copperfit was taken to court over false and misleading claims), or KinesioTape (that has been found in blind studies to do nothing), and so on.
Celebrity endorsements. They're great for wagging the dog.
You're a washed-up world-famous jagoff and convicted doper. How do you pay the bills? Or rather, who will pay you to represent their company/product?
