Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Xero looks like the same hubs as the Neuvations/Forte Titans, etc.

How about some used American Classic AC-420?

Everything's relative of course. But I think there is some consensus that you need to get in the Zipp 303 range (44mm) before you start to really get perceptible differences from a conventional rim.

Personally, if you're not going to deep dish CF, I wouldn't worry about how aero one AL rim is compared to another.

30mm is kinda like an aero rims' little brother.....in that maybe someday it'll grow up into a real aero rim.

In comparing my 30mm Niobum wheels with my old Bonty Race Lites.....I couldn't tell a difference at all. Well, my Bonty's were MUCH stiffer than my POS Garcia wheels....

I love how these myths get propagated forever! There is a bigger difference between a 20mm rim and a 30mm rim than between a 30mm rim and a 45mm rim... all else being equal. And 20mm rims usually need more spokes... so all is not equal. There is no dividing line or step function... no place where "non aero" gives way to "aero".

Let's see...I've owned the Race Lites, which were 22mm I think (can't remember), currently own 30mm Niobium wheels, and owned 44mm carbon wheels.....

The only ones that I almost felt a difference with were the 44mm wheels.

I have the Ksyrium ES in Tubular. I never have weighed them but I believe they come in under the 1500 mark. They cost me about 530$. For that price I think it is ok. I would not pay more for them tho.

Doesn't spoke count contribute considerably to the aerodynamics of the wheel?

In the $650-700 range, you can start to get into the low-end deep-section carbon tubular wheelsets. The BD holiday special had $400 50mm carbon tubulars, and clinchers for a bit more. But that's over.

You selectively excerpt my post. First I acknowledged that it's relative. Thus all else equal, the deeper you go, the more aero advantage. So of course 30mm is going to be a bit more aero than 20mm.

What I said was you need to get in the 44mm range before the differences between a conventional wheel and a deep dish wheel are going to be perceptible.

for example, at 50km/hr, the difference in watts between a 21mm Mavic Askium Race, and a 30mm Campagnolo Eurus is 2.2 watts. https://www.rouesartisanales.com/article-2141818.html

My point is 2.2 watts is not going to be a perceptible difference.

I certainly prefer carbon wheels however " Low-End " carbon wheels are not something I would endorse as a good idea. however you can find some decent used reynolds etc.. for the $800-1000 range.

I mainly use reynolds and am amazed at the stiffness/ light weight they provide however it comes at a price. the Es i have at the $530 price I think is a good enuff deal on them for someone on a budget to consider. Another thing to consider is the warranty, reputation, and they really are a nice rolling wheel. Much better than I originally thought they would be. I would not pay MSRP for them ($1100) or whatever.
