Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your experience with Stan's No Tubes?

My LBS owner is retiring. He has offered to sell me a Stan's No Tube wheelset for 50% off. I think the original price was in the $500-600 range. I've been interested in Mavic USTs because I'm a big Mavic fan and they are supposed to be really easy to deal with. Just wondering If those who have had experience with Stan's can tell me what ups and downs might exist. TIA.

No issues with mine or my GF's wheels. They make some pretty bomber stuff. plus you can get end caps cheap that can be swapped to any frame .. QR, 15mm, 20mm thru axles etc. Only thing i've heared is some tires are hard to mount on, but that will help them seat i'd think once you got them on. I don't remember mine being too tough.

Could you mount them with a floor pump? Or did you use a compressor.

I have only done tubeless with a compressor b/c i have one. i'm guessing it would depend on the pump and the tires.

Some combinations can be mounted with a floor pump. Others will require compressed gas such as CO2 or an air compressor. It is arguable that the easier mounted ones are more susceptible to burping due to their "looser" fit.

The floor pump depends on the bead and the tape . i could mount my tires with a floor pump on new tape and sealant inside . after the tape dimpled into the spoke holes i needed almost an hour per tire .

No problems with mine after some 5 years or more. I am taking about the rims. The wheels were built with CK hubs. I buy my tires from the LBS that built my wheels. The shop mounts them for free, so I can't opine on DIY installation of new tires.

BTW...If you ever have to deal with Mavic customer service for something like a warranty issue, you might no longer be such a fan of the company.

I've heard this before on BF. I have no experience to date. I've had a set of Aksiums and a set of Ksyrium Elites for about 5 years and they have never failed nor needed truing. Which is why I'm a fan.
