Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Now that we've put the shifting issue to bed, I realized I might be braking too much. Anyone else having this Concern? Discuss.

When I read that some of you are shifting hundreds of times on a similar length ride. On a normal ride it is the wind direction that makes the decision to shift or hold fast. And I shift into the big ring out on the road and into the small through the villages. I wish there was cause to shift more. Sadly there is not.
I don't think anyone has issues with your lack of shifting; I think it was the notion that we were shifting too much.

Nothing has been put to bed, but since you mention it why, are you braking for no reason?

You're not replacing brake pads everytime @datlas changes a shift cable are you?

So aspiring cyclists would buy them. It’s called cash flow.

My main braking challenge is guessing when/how much to apply the brakes, when approaching a red light, to minimize its impact on average speed.

Even if you have a pretty good feel for normal red light duration, it's not always possible to know how long is left on the cycle.

Do you start slowing early, in hopes that you'll still be rolling when it turns green? Or do you gamble that green will come sooner, and brake late?

It's quite the conundrum.

I only shift when I think about it, and sometimes when I don’t think about it.

Two days off between trips is rough, I don’t know how I did this for 5 years.
