I'm sorry my lack of shifting has caused so much consternation in the group. But you can now see why I was shocked. SHOCKED. When I read that some of you are shifting hundreds of times on a similar length ride. On a normal ride it is the wind direction that makes the decision to shift or hold fast. And I shift into the big ring out on the road and into the small through the villages. I wish there was cause to shift more. Sadly there is not.

Back in my younger days I used to pretty much only shift the FD, leave the RD in some middle gear and tough it through most terrain imperfections. Builds stronger muscles IMO. For me it was never about the endurance you need for long distance or racing where the gearing had to be optimal. That was a time when 10 speeds was plenty and 21 was just overkill and if you favored overkill you were considered a wimp.

My main braking challenge is guessing when/how much to apply the brakes, when approaching a red light, to minimize its impact on average speed.
Even if you have a pretty good feel for normal red light duration, it's not always possible to know how long is left on the cycle.
Do you start slowing early, in hopes that you'll still be rolling when it turns green? Or do you gamble that green will come sooner, and brake late?
It's quite the conundrum.
