I believe they were a vinyl covered plastic seat. They also were made 1980 to 1982. There may have been some made in late 1979 but they were 1980 models. Roger

No; there's nothing wrong with vinyl.
If it gets rained on, you just wipe it dry with a paper towel. Leather saddles like my beloved Brooks, OTOH, don't like rain.

The one Voyageur 11.8 (a 1980) that came through my hands had a vinyl seat, which I'm fairly sure was original. The picture in the 1980 catalog on Tom Findley's site certainly looks so, too.

I've got an Ariake Jaguar that I took off a 1982 Schwinn Voyageur SP. It looks like thin leather to me but when I checked the underside of the fabric at the edges I can see the weave pattern of some sort of synthetic material.

My red '80 Voyager 11.8 still has it's original seat and yes it is vinyl. Actually the bike is all original except for the tires and brake pads.
