Pedals slipping and slamming me in the heel.
Hey guys, this only happens on the right pedal. On occasion when I'm pedaling, it doesn't matter what speed the pedal with just flip upside down on me, dumping my foot off and then smashing my heel. Is this an issue with the pedal being loose or something? How can I fix this? I have a Schwinn Le Tour from the 80s, is it possible to remove the pedals from that bike and get new ones?

put some toe clips on and your feet will have to stay on.

You're just lifting too much of the weight off your foot on the upstroke or you're beginning to move your foot forward at the top of the upstroke before the pedal gets there. The "fix" is to just change how you pedal. The more tech'y way to fix this would be to add toe clips or clipless pedals and shoes. But assuming you want to keep the riding casual you just need to change your pedalling style to be more in synch with the bike.
Just be happy that you don't have the off road platform pedals with the meat chewer studs on them.... .

Toe clips/straps are the best solution, they'll keep your feet where they should be.

I actually recommend beginners learn to ride with just a bare pedal spindle. Then you learn to apply force only in the correct spot and correct direction. At the bottom of the pedal-stroke, you actually toe down slightly and push on the front of the spindle back. At the top of the stroke, you push forward on the back of the spindle. After a while, you can even sprint out of the saddle!

if the pedal occasionally turns with the crank instead of your foot, the bearings may be shot. unless these pedals have serviceable bearings and you're up for the task, I would just suggest purchasing a new set of pedals.
if you sit beside your bike and turn the pedal slowly by hand, does it feel smooth and quiet or do you hear grinding or even feel it binding?
