Gonna be super cold this weekend, where should I ride?
been pretty good about exploring 1 new unpaved trail every weekend, for past month or so. put studs on 1 bike but there's no ice around, so I'm saving that bike for now. gonna be real dry Sat & Sun & I kinda miss my light road bike so maybe I should ride that? I could ride straight from my house early then back before Wifey even gets out of bed. she wants me to help her car shop, ugh. or should I hit a new trail, one more time before the white stuff comes? or maybe that's more reason to ride the road bike. gonna be so cold, gonna use full-skin-cover-up-mode. can't decide if that should affect where I ride

Since you need people to make up your mind for you ... you should quit riding. Spend this weekend driving to my house to deliver all your bikes and gear.
Solved that problem forever for you.

The road bike will be a lot colder than the the off-road bike and require more layers and gear.

Not sure.. on a road bike there's more molecular friction with the air whizzing by; this has a significant warming effect. At least that's the only explanation i have for discovering the my armpits are moist after a ride in cold weather.

I will keep that in mind for the next discussion of wind chill effect.

Surely you guys have an heated indoor cycle track with lakes and forest sections? I thought you had all that stuff up there in america. A friend told me he even went skiing on a small mountain in a shopping mall.

Yabutt that mountain didn't have snow, did it? I saw something like that in Denver, Colorado at Gart's Sports Palace, or something like that. It was carpeted, and the carpet rolled like a conveyor belt. That was over thirty years ago and I didn't see any bikes.
No lakes or forests.

Well,@ rr6, down the Southwest Corridor, it was 28º yesterday (Saturday) afternoon…not super cold… and I rode my 14 mile commute to Kenmore Square. I have some new cold weather gear and I’m still learning what combinations to wear, and I was overdressed.
Over the years, I have made a chart of dress for various temperatures, and I need to update it for the new gear. A particularly important set point is 35º when I put on goggles, as I did yesterday for the first time this season. Frankly though, commuting is what really motivates me to go out and ride in the first place; I need a destination.

Better than that..... we just put on a pair of 3d goggles and watch ourselves skiing and biking from the comfort of our lazy boy's.

had to help Wifey yesterday, gonna ride today. got some new Bolle goggles on recommendation from BF members. wore them while I worked on my bike Friday night with the balaclava. didn't fog up but then the basement is usually 50 degrees. I found they pressed on the bridge of my nose a little & Sat am I had a small uneventful shortlived bloody nose. gonna be careful with them today. re: needing a destination been working on one. latest thinking is drive kids car to work w bike. leave car & bike home from office. kids won't be home to move it for the condo plows so having it at work will be helpful. I'll drive my car to work & have 2 cars at work so will have to return with daughter Monday night for it. her bus gets in at 8pm. it's only 22 miles office to home but that's a decent cold-ride for me. less wind today but only 11 degrees this morning? put water out for the birds & it froze over pretty quickly

oh yeah me too, but you have to be motivated. it wasn't so bad we went to a good place with a good sale guy so it wasn't high pressured. Wifey has some big decisions to make. it was good to be there & be supportive. she kept telling me to relax & just meditate but then kept asking for my opinions even tho she didn't like any of them ... you married?

got er done. took the road bike. 22 miles in 1hr 45 min at 32 degrees. rode southwest so sun was in my face up until the last mile due to overcast from coming storm. what I wore was good for this amount of time at that temp. took just one quick pit stop

So I recently bought a Specialized Diverge Elite aluminum bike as a wet weather beater, and it rides nearly as nicely as the S-Works.The ride and shifting of the Diverge is as smooth as the S-Works, but the feel is more ”solid,” with 30 C tires. I think this is a great all-purpose bike…
I’m hoping I can ride the Diverge with Marathon 30 C studded tires safely at usual pressures, as I have done on the Cannondale mountain bike. So now, the Cannondale will be reserved completely for only miserable studded-tire riding, maybe about 3 to 4 weeks during the winter and my riding needs are completely met. I liken my three bikes to a Lamborghini, a Lexus, and a Humvee.
