[SOLVED] Couple of questions about cargo trailer on wheel axle
Hello,
I'm looking for infos about buying a bike cargo trailer for a co-op.
It looks like a trailer that hooks onto the rear wheel axle is more stable than those that hook up to the seat post, but before recommending the former, I'm concerned about a couple of things:

It looks like a trailer that hooks onto the rear wheel axle is more stable than those that hook up to the seat post, but before recommending the former, I'm concerned about a couple of things:
- Do they fit onto bikes that have derailleurs (through axle?) or internal gear hubs (Nexus, Alfine, Rohloff)?
- Won't it put too much stress onto the axle and ruin it over time?

1) I have a skewer mounted trailer hitch on my Rohloff* CC hub.. [Burly flatbed]
2) I have an under nut hitch on my 3 speed Brompton
And The Sram i9 IGH on my Bike Friday Tikit (Thule Chariot)
Ruin over what Time frame? 20 years of daily use?
by numerous ham fisted CoOp members?
How much to you plan to haul, in weight?
* There is a 2nd left end for the Solid axle nut fixed Rohloff,
longer , for more threaded length..

A "thru-axle" could be a problem as there may be nothing to hook onto on the left side, unless spreading the dropouts and squeezing the mount under the dropout. This isn't the same as a quick release.
As @fietsbob mentioned, so far I've done well with a skewer mounted trailer. Make sure you're using quality steel skewers. I usually mount the skewer lever to the right side on the rear.
Your rear axle is the strongest part of the bike. Think of it, it is where all the pulling of the wheel goes to.
Some chainstay/seatstay mounted trailers have issues with disc brakes, and perhaps large rear hubs. But, the axle mount should be fine in most situations.
Our local bike co-op likes the seat post mounted trailers, and they'll take heavy loads.

I don't think I've ever pulled one of them, but one advantage is that the trailers are easy to move around the shop by hand. Less of a trip hazard? They also have an integral kickstand at front of the trailer which is down all the time.
@fietsbob also mentioned Bike Friday. If using a BF trailer, they use an male end of an air hose either permanently welded or bolted to the chainstay, and a piece of air hose and the female hose coupler attached to the trailer to give the trailer hitch flex. It works quite nice.

Note ; 'robert axle project ' started offering a replacement to tow BoB trailers,
with through axle frames/wheels they have..
and offer left end only, for 2 wheel trailers

Above shows the Chariot trailer and hitch..
Burly CoOp had a Skewer with the Trailer hitch integrated on the left end..
that went away along with the original 406 wheel, Made in Eugene, Trailers..

Depending on your trailer and what the tow bike is there are connection points that clamp on to the rear triangle. I have an older burley flatbed that has the rear triangle clamp setup. It has been great for me for 15 years modified as a dog trailer. That setup tho does not work with disc brakes. Keep in mind a good kick stand will be something you will want. Something I've been doing is keeping an old pedal toe strap on my handlebar for the front brake. I tighten it up when I stop at a destination and if the front wheel doesn't turn the forks don't turn making the bike much more stable. These days there are lots of variables with bicycles and trailers these days, suspension frames, disclosure brakes, many different trailers to choose from but probably the biggest thing going is cost. If you can find a good price on a used trailer you might be able to modify it to meet your / the coop needs. I live in socal and my area for Craigs list always has something and sometimes crazy cheap. I've picked up 3 trailers from cl over the years.
Best of luck

Axle or chainstay mount is stronger and less likely to flip than seatpost mount, at least in my experience.
Also, a seatpost mount blocks the top of your rear rack.
With an axle mount you can still use a trunk bag and panniers along with the trailer.

Last weekend I tore the kickstand plate off my new Breezer Downtown by using a double kickstand so I thought to try a chainstay kickstand. I tow a Chariot trailer and have an IGH requiring a Thule internal hub adapter axle extension nut. I was wondering if the Greenfield SKS2BC kickstand would work given it mounts close to the rear of the chainstay but am happy to report the Thule adapter pushes out the Chariot trailer hitch cup far enough that both fit.

I have the chariot hitch ball on my Carry Freedom City (Folding trailer.) and the hitch on my Brompton ..
3 speed, was a simple under the nut mount , I found a 2nd hitch , so
Its also just under the IGH left axle nut . Sram I-9 hub.. Bike Friday Tikit
Pletscher rear stands also offer an option ..
this one is adjustable in length, shorter and longer .
