Really it all comes down to what metrics you want to track - I'm a bit of a metrics junkie .
I had the same issue with my Apple watch, both Series 3 and 4. My son-in-law, on the other hand is somehow getting heart rate data into Strava through his Apple Watch (he doesn't have a ride computer). I believe this is because he uses the Strava app on the watch and starts his rides there instead of the iPhone. I never tried that because you can't use Strava's tracking feature when you start the workout from the watch.

I'm now using a Wahoo heart rate strap which works fine.

It's frustrating and it seems like both would be easy for Strava to fix. And it's not like folks aren't requesting these features.

Yup, Strava will work on JUST the watch. I like my phone on the handlebars so I can get all my info at a glance, and Strava won't do that. The Strava official support forums are filled with complaints about that, along with people cancelling their premium memberships...and it goes back several years. Strava's only response is consistently "we'll ask our development team to look into it".

5/3 - 31.36 - I have now been able to ride 30+ miles in under 2 hours. Getting better every ride.
5/5 - 9.44 - wife came out for an early morning ride.
5/5 - 25.84 - warm up with the wife first then able to roll solo, windy but still a good ride.
5/14 - 15.20 - took a weekend off and that was a mistake. Screwed up the whole rhythm
5/15 - 21.25 - trying to make up for missing the weekend

MTD - 103.09
YTD - 983.77

What about Cyclemeter? I have tried that and it works pretty well but it appears the heart rate features just sync with the IPhone and is not a metric within the app. Unless I am missing something.

One of the side affects of getting in better shape is that your blood pressure medication can become too high of a dose leading to dizziness. I was suppose to ride Wednesday too, but my dizziness had me staying home from work and avoiding even walking. I found that if I bring my blood pressure up I feel much better, so I just hop in the car and drive to work. That 45 min drive really brings my blood pressure up.

Not sure I'll make my goal this month. I'm already a little behind schedule, and I've been dealing with some fatigue I haven't previously experienced. Not sure what's up with that.

On my Garmin vivoactive HR watch, it has a setting to broadcast HR during activities. I wonder if the Apple watch has something similar.

The Apple watch will broadcast to some apps, like MapMyRide, so I can view my heart rate on my phone. Strava just doesn't integrate with it - I believe the issue is on Strava's end, not the watch.

Very nice! To get that much climbing here I'd have to find a "hill" and just repeat it...about 100 times.

After a 9 mile warmup and then a stop for supplies this is the final 46 miles of the second day of my June tour:

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30006761?beta=false

Fifteen of the sixteen miles of that climb are dirt. 3,200'+ of altitude gain. The descent, which starts at the ID border, is paved. Since the nearest "town" is another 9 mile beyond my campground I am going to have to bring snacks, lunch, dinner and next day's breakfast supplies, along with extra water to get me to the campground. I have been told the ID side is quite scenic and pretty much deserted at the time of year I will be there.
