Shimano 600 Tricolor RD-6400 compatibility

Looking to swap out the suntour VX RD & 6 speed suntour freewheel on my bike with a 7S shimano MF-HG37 freewheel & tricolor RD-6400. Will the RD index properly with the MF-HG37, or only work with cassette? It is rated for max 28T, just want to do a double check.

Regards

1- I take it that the SunTour system isn't indexed? Then what Shimano shift lever will the changes include?

2- The cog to cog spacing is independent of how the cog set attaches to the hub. So compatible freewheels or cassettes will interchange, excepting the hub of course.

3- The chain will need changing too. Andy

You'll just need to make sure you have a Shimano 7-speed shifter.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry for being so vague in my original post. I've swapped out the original suntour friction stem shifters for Shimano levers mounted on the downtube in friction mode for the time being. I also realize the chain will need to be swapped aswell. My main concern is if the new RD is index- compatible with freewheel. Total bike noob btw, learning alot as I go!

7-speed cassettes and freewheels are the same 5.0mm spacing, at least in Shimano.
