New chainstay and a modification??
My Surly Long Haul Trucker is in need of a new non-drive side stay because of a mishap.
I was wondering if it might be a possibility to add a "plate" that could be a mounting point for a rear bolt on kickstand?
Because this frame has S&S couplers I think it is worth repairing.

Kickstand plates are not hard to add. The last frame I did has one. What actual mounting location are you thinking of? On the chainstay bottoms just behind the bb shell or on the chainstay just ahead of the rear axle? Have you considered a center stand? Very nice when the bike is fully loaded.
Here's a shot of how I did a kickstand mounting on a bike I made years ago. The studs are simple nails brazed in place. The kickstand's top edges got scalloped with a rat tail file where the studs are. This keeps the kickstand from twisting with deployment of retraction and thus the mounting bolt/plate doesn't need uber tightening. Andy.

"rear kickstand" isn't specific for me to reference. I get a few different designs and attachment methods when I google.
Some of my question was about a "leaning bike type" or a "keep bike centered but lift a wheel". Some of it was about the kickstand's interface with the bike. Some of the versions I see on google look to be mounted to a specifically designed drop out. While a skilled frame builder can do some pretty involved mods there might be a different option that is so much easier to do. Andy
