Shimano chainrings have varying profiles designed to assist shifting which are often mistaken for broken teeth.

that stx looks like the rings are replaceable. someone should get some use out of it
STX cranksets are odd, early ones had a wierd (95?) BCD with an odd middle ring setup, while later ones had a more normal 94 BCD

Bcd? I should know this, but I'm drawing a blank.

Here's a fascinating discussion about crank lengths.

Edit: bolt circle diameter? I know it's not binary coded decimal.

yeah, bolt circle diameter. the crank's bolt pattern for mounting sprockets! it's important to know for when it comes time to replace your sprockets. it's usually printed or stamped on the sprocket somewhere.

Reunited, after a long while

After looking for one of these, I finally scored a cheap complete Haro Extreme in great condition. This is a 91 and they were made in USA (tacked in Mexico and welded in SoCal)

I used to have a 92 back in 91 until I crashed it in 93. The 91 uses smaller diameter tubes than the 92, probably to deal with the cracking above the front derailleur. The 92 also had a seatpost collar that slipped off and broke easily. They both use odd seatpost sizes (26.4 for 91 and 29.4 for 92) and the OEM seatposts used chromoly shafts.

Its good to be reunited with an old bike. Bonus NOS 93 Stumpjumper picture

Hi, here's my late 90's Raleigh M-80, bought it for 80 bucks some 7 years ago.. It has caught a little of rust in the Chromolly frame at some parts the painting had chipped off. And also I had to replace the front derailleur for same reason, rust on the bolt that holds the gear wire. But I think it still looks good, just wonder exactly what year it was made..just rode it two days ago. Everything it's still original minus that derailleur and the saddle. I love this bike for being low maintenance and light.

I just bought the same crankset, albeit for mobility issues. I'd love to see some pics of the cranks after stripping.

Don't hold your breath; the husbeast insists on doing it, and his plate is full for a while.

Late 90’s Schwinn Moab 2. First bike I’ve had with the “low” normal Deore XT rear derailleur. Takes some getting used to.

Pretty much as received! The shifting worked st first. I have to look at that. Otherwise it’s a nice rider! I’m going to put street tires on it and probably swap the crank for a road crank. Other than that it’s cool !

Or, alternatively, you can keep the mountain gearing and easily roll up anything you point it at.

Nice bike, BTW.

Thats true! But, I already have 2 more modern mtb’s and they’re way less painful to ride on the dirt. I bought this after promising the universe that I would put slicks on it. Ha ha!

I did take it out with my friends last week and it performed admirably on most of it!

Fair enough. Where I live, I'm surrounded by stoopid steep hills, and even road bikes need granny gears.

Previously posted in the drop bar conversion thread, I've reinstalled the factory cockpit on my '86 Cannondale SM600. The drop bars were fun, but frankenizing what had been a bone stock survivor didn't sit well with me.
