August 2019 100 Miles/Kilometers Thread...Summer Is In Full Swing!

Who else hates the heat? I'll be doing lots of early morning rides and some night rides to beat the heat. I'm going to try to cover 1,000 miles this month.

Stay hydrated, my friends!

Well I only managed 54km (34 miles) last month, though my first ride was the 28th and second ride was tonight. I think I can do 400km in August (near 250 miles). Yes, I hate the heat by the way, and I also ride and run in KM mode because it makes more sense than imperial measure, even though I'm American!

Lots of travel in August, goal is 300 miles, this may be a stretch. I a bit ahead of my annual goal.

Hit my 500th mile for the season yesterday evening so I need to try and get 1k for the year. It's been a long time since I've been riding so much so while it's not as much as some the goal is 1k and beyond if I can.

August Goal 200

08/01 10.1

I may shoot for 300 but that's going to be tough so I'll be satisfied with 200.

Though I'm still getting my bikes sorted out mechanically, and I had a lot of travel in the first part of the month, I let the Trek challenge on Strava push me over a hundred miles in July. This month I'll just let flow more naturally, as I still need work work my base back up before I should really start pushing.

I suppose it'll help that my little cutoff route I'm using for this has a little bit of climbing, though not bad. about 431 ft in just under 13 miles, but mostly concentrated in one spot, so mild hill repeats every lap. Back in Clovis, where I was riding with my brother, the same ride would yield about a tenth that much elevation. Pretty darned flat, but the wind could easily make up for that.
But... I digress!

Gonna try for between 100-200 this month.

8-3: 26 mi
8-11: 20.5 mi
8-18: 17.3 mi (been doing more hiking this week)
8-24: 7.2 mi (still hiking, managed to get my wife on her bike today, so short ride)
total: 71.0 mi (slow start this month)

August Goal: 300 miles

August 1 - 20.3 miles
August 2 - 8.3 miles - only got to ride during my lunch hour, no energy
August 3 - 18.3 miles - Dog 1, Squirrel 0, Rider -1

I took a rather nasty fall today. The best news is, I can't find any damage to the bike (Fuji) except for a few scratches on the handlebars and the left pedal. A dog ran out, and I took a fall trying to avoid it. My left wrist is very sore, left thigh sore and bruised - this too shall pass - back in the saddle tomorrow, I hope! Almost hit a squirrel on today's ride, too - strange day. Finally passed 1,000 miles for 2019! So yeah - what a day! I don't think my wrist is broken, and the last time I went to Urgent Care after a spill on the bike it cost me $210, so I'm trying to avoid that...

August to date: 46.9 miles

2019 to date: 1016.7 miles

I hope you heal up fast. Most of my close calls are rabbits. There’s an absolute population explosion of them here. I have a couple dart out in front of me on almost every ride. I’ve never hit one but have come so close that I can hear their toenails scratching at the ground as they run. All in all they must be pretty smart or just very good at getting out of the way.

I almost got hit by a flock of geese a couple of weeks ago, I was riding on the path along the river in the evening and a flock came in for the evening. One missed me by a foot or so and then the rest of the flock landed. And I didn't get hit by any bird turds either. Whew!!

Get well soon, I normally fell because of stupid stuff, like walking my dog while riding my bike, or clipping out on the wrong side when I stopped at a light (I'm sure I gave the people in the cars a good laugh).
