Easiest way to fitness.

It might help with understanding some of the human factors in cycling.
But, I agree. There might be some utility in a robotic trike for deliveries and errands, but not particularly for a bike.
Cameras and photography? Embed them in bike races?

Maybe expand the concept to feed back electrical/neural impulses into the remote human, who can then "experience" the ride without actually having been there. I would think that within a generation or two, we can fully simulate exercise without ever participating ourselves. Yay!

I'd swear, I thought this was the other thread on 'self-riding' bikes from Google. Reality is becoming very fuzzy.

I suppose the technology to make one might be useful but a self driving bike is of limited utility.
A self driving and digging machine deep in a mine for example, might use such technology. Something to go into nuclear plants and such.
Just struggling to figure out the use case for a self driving bike. Why would a bike ride around on its own without a human?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and speculate that the bike in the OP and the Google bike are of equal authenticity. The bike shown with its controller walking next to it appears not to have enough rotating mass to keep it upright. The voice control may be real, but the self-driving aspect will be shown to be a hoax, I believe.

Um, I've seen that Netherlands "self-bike" video. It was shown by Google to be a joke, for April Fools Day; they even showed a behind-the-scenes video of how the crew were holding up the bike (which was edited out by CGI).

When the "Google Bike" video came out a few years ago I received it in an email link from a cycling buddy. He thought it was real! I had to point out the April 1 date. I would not expect anybody would think it would be real when it gets to the part with riders typing on computers and kids boarding and heading off alone!
Like Sweeks, I also doubted the authenticity of NY Times story as the video looks phony. It is also reported at the MIT Tech Review so there must be some truth to it.

The only application I can think of where a self-riding bicycle would be more useful than a self driving three or more wheeled vehicle, is to pass through narrow gaps - as it wouldn't need a handlebar, pedals or saddle, it could be as narrow as the hubs allow.
Then again, I have a hard time to think of any scenario where an access to narrow spaces without any kind of payload would be needed, since the payload would most probably be wider than the bike.
