Today I just rode to work (again). Had to skip a few days for weather reasons and other commitments. Today was about navigating the thin patches of snow dust on the road shoulders. Also navigating one of Woburn's roving bands of wild turkeys. Today too I rode the horse that throwed me a few weeks ago. Today (so far) it was docile and did what I asked of it.

I envy those of you who can just up and ride away any ol' time. But I managed another 32 mile ride today, interrupted for 8 hours in the middle unfortunately.

We took our tandem out for 43.75 miles today, home to a nice picnic in Concord Center.

On our way outward on the Minuteman Bikeway we came upon another cyclist surrounded by a veritable yard sale of upside down bike and tubes and pump and wheel stuff, skewers even removed from the hubs. I called out if he needed anything and he said no except for some idea of where his flats were coming from, two in two days. Hmm, he'd mounted those tires for a gravel ride a few days ago and didn't expect to be getting flats on the MM's smooth pavement. I offered to help. He'd removed the tire completely from the wheel so he handed it to me. I spent a few minutes examining the inside and the tread and presto bingo just like that I found a shard of glass in the tread barely piercing the inside. But enough to cause a slow flat. I've had enough of 'em to know, even fixed one on the tandem's rear tire just last night. After a few moments of thanks and conversation we proceeded on our way feeling good about having helped someone. And wondering why he hadn't been able to cogitate that out for himself.

Sometimes vintage brains can come in handy, I guess.

I haven't been riding enough...

So here's some random pictures from a few rides over the last couple weeks.

I hadn't ridden this Grand Touring in at least a couple years, so I took it out for my first ride of the year, on the local MUP. Cold, heavy, slow(the bike felt like it too)



I rode the Snoqualmie Valley trail up to Snoqualmie Falls with a friend, two weeks back. A cold gravel ride plagued with flat tires...





Last weekend I did this for about 35 miles.



Couple nights later I took my kids out for some sub-freezing nite time punishment.



This morning was another cold and damp one..



It's been pretty damn cold here this winter(compared to most of the NW mildish winters that we have). Seems hard to get the motivation to get out...

I'm really enjoying the alpine gearing on this PX10. 33 gear inches will pull me up just about any hill, and 107 gear inches lets me put on a little gas on the way back down.

Seeing Roger M's post above about his neglected Motobecane Grand Touring inspired me to take out my dust-covered Gary Fisher for a short late afternoon ride between the afternoon rain and sunset for a quick trip down to ride a few trails at San Joaquin River. The Fisher hasn't seen much use since my good friend & riding buddy had his mountain bike stolen last year. C & V content-do rim brakes count?

Been staying close to home.
The area at the base of our small mountains (Cougar and Squak), in the westernmost Cascade foothills, is known by a couple of names. May Valley is probably the most positively descriptive, as the May Creek is mostly a seasonal wetlands (aka, moss pit). Coalfield is a name from the past, since abandoned. But our farms(?) are rustic, and the winter lawnmowers can be friendly. Rode the almost new lugged steel bike. Apologies for the Ergo (i luv 'em), a concession to modernization.

Yesterday's ride, calm before the Storm.

Just a short ride around the local roads, way too much traffic due to an explosion at the paper mill that closed US 29. All the traffic, North and South bound was detoured through the roads I have to use in order to get out of the place, including our street. Way too many big trucks and fast moving vehicles to get in amongst them on our narrow rural roads.

A couple of pics yesterday, along the cotton fields that got harvested last November. The green grass is winter rye that is planted to slow erosion, by the farmer

Not today but on Saturday I rode on Quantico base in VA. A friend introduced me to a gentleman who rides there frequently with a number of other retired Marines. There were 6 of us including another civilian. We did ~50 miles on the south west section and only saw about 4 cars on the roads. No real hills, just rolling roads. New for me both the ride and the riders. Had a great time with them. I was a bit apprehensive that I could keep up with them but ended up fitting in well.


I was surprised at the stats from my bike computer. The sensor wasn't aligned correctly so missed the first 2 miles or less. Averaged 16.4 over 2hr 57 min. in 48.7 miles. Took the Pinarello which ran great. Experienced one flat which was easily fixed with a spare tube.


Lots of wooded areas and open fields. Very therapeutic in the quite of nature and sound of 23 and 25 tires running on wet pavement with the occasional snick of gear changes, no rain. Reminded me of Oregon!
