Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Near San Francisco Bay

The Birdy BD-1, the Raleigh RSW-16 folder (mid 1960s), and the Santana Sovereign tandem (taken I believe during the Marin Century near San Francisco a few years ago) which I bought used and seems a little small for us in this picture.

Come on, bike forums. A guy posts a shot of a wooden, potentially home built bike and nobody bats an eyelash?

What's the story with this thing?

The Mississippi River is beginning to ice up now - a sign that we are in the depths of winter. However, snowfall has been remarkably light. This means the trails are still rideable for bikes without studded tires, and I took full advantage on New Years Day:

My U08 "Velo de Ville" build has turned out even better than I had hoped.

The 700c conversion with black Rigida wheels and Panaracer Tour tires lightens the bike considerably and gives it a nice, lively feel on the road. One pleasant surprise was that the original MAFAC brake calipers had the range to accommodate the swap. This is one plush, smooth-riding classic.

The only thing left to install on this bike is the Velo Orange Plume Alaire chainguard, which is currently awaiting its black and gold paint job. I have to wait until warmer weather for that, the minimum conditions are 65°F and 50% humidity - otherwise you get runs and orange peel. But this setup will suffice for cafe rides on milder days.
