Nice 12.15 mile ride down to the James River here in Richmond, VA before the solar eclipse...
Stopped to try to take a photo of the river and someone's gazebo in their backyard (too much shade...)
Took a shot of the Huguenot Bridge in the distance along the James River.
Gee, I wonder if anyone knows where I stopped to take this photo!
Lastly, I stopped at Trinity United Methodist, perhaps seeking some "Divine Guidance" in getting me home safe and sound, as I opted to take Forest Ave up to Patterson (busy!) and rode Patterson back to my side streets and home.

I headed over to Edmonds to watch my second-ever eclipse from the same location I saw the first one in '72. I took the Somec:
Currently it's set up with a 17t bailout, so I had to grunt a bit over the hills, but I felt great so no real issues. Spent an hour documenting the event, then headed home. I felt so good by the time I got to Bothell I just kept going down to Redmond, then circled back. Nice 40 miles or so.

HA! I'm pretty sure I crossed with you on Ballinger Way, just east of I-5. I was chugging up the hill (on the sidewalk, at that point, 'cause Ballinger has lots of traffic and not very generous lanes) and I saw a guy on a light blue bike, dressed sharp in all-black kit, no helmet, moving fast down that hill. By the time I thought, "Hey, I bet that was Drillium Dude on his Somec..." you were another couple hundred yards off. I'm glad you didn't spot me, as it turned out, I made the 11:10 Edmonds-Kingston ferry by about two minutes and any short chat would have given me a 50 minute delay on getting home.
Your hair's getting pretty long these days.

...and this is what I was up to at the time. Long ride home from Bellevue to Port Angeles, 102 miles on Eclipse Day. A great day for riding, too! I've had my Cannondale tourer for a long time it seems, but I've never taken it on a really long ride until now. A good bike for the trip.
Somerset neighborhood above Factoria. Real estate people talk about their million-dollar views here, but most of the houses cost more than that. That's the Seattle skyline on the left; Bellevue skyline on the right:
About 20 miles in, those eclipse-generated crescent shaped shadows on the bike path. Very cool effect.
About 35 miles in, coming off the ferry at Kingston (Seattle skyline on the left, again; peeking through the sea smoke):
Forty or so miles, riding into the historical mill town hamlet of Port Gamble:
Two miles down the road is the Hood Canal Bridge. Unusually calm weather that day:
At about 75 miles there's this trestle bridge on the Olympic Discovery Trail, which gets you away from having to ride on Hwy 101 all day:
The Olympic Discovery Trail isn't completely finished yet in some spots:
Two miles east of my destination, the final rest stop at the East White Creek estuary, lovely spot for a sit-down around sunset:

Actually Yesterday ... Did the Canyon to Canyon ride with the Channel Islands Bike Club. Saticoy, CA to Santa Paula and back, up and back thru Aliso and Wheeler Canyons, 33 miles. I rode the old '73 Super Course, and had an enjoyable ride, A little cool and cloudy at the start, sunny and warmer coming home. Supposed to be back 105-108° here is LA this weekend. The route is shown, and my Raleigh parked at Rabelais French Cajun Bakery in Santa Paula, great place to stop.

Another Dreary Saturday in Saint Paul
Today I took my Barracuda out for a swim around my hometown.
This is my recent $100 CL find, a 1994 Barracuda A2B, already set-up in winter bike configuration:
Minus the studded tires, of course.
It was raining lightly or misting for most of the ride today, so I was only able to photograph for a short time around Swede Hollow and the old brewery. All these images were taken at an ISO setting between 3200 and 6400, so they are fairly grainy. Rhymes with "rainy" though, doesn't it?
Over by the brewery there is a small grassy knoll, where we find some rocks and sculpture that give off a very strange vibe. One can imagine folks who hang out here at night engaging in strange rituals amongst the stones and boulders. This is located near (Positively) 4th Street, after all, and I've heard that around here, "Everybody Must Get Stoned". Bob Dylan is from Minnesota, after all.
It was a lot of fun riding back down that hill with wide slicks on wet grass.
There was at least one other rider out-and-about today; although I can't imagine why they would lock their bike to this particular sign. It's kind of out in the middle of nowhere...
One wonders what these free-stylee BMX guys get up to... He may have been lurking in the bushes nearby, for all I know.
I couldn't ride past the brewery without shooting this bike against the fence:
With no kickstand on the `Cuda, I have to get creative about where and how I pose it.
It seems I find a new angle to photograph these bridges from every time I pass through here:
Even the more modern freeway bridges have a certain artistic flair, though I'm sure the graffiti wasn't part of the design:
Tomorrow the weather is supposed to be better, at least for awhile. It would be nice to see the sun again.

Same route, which is pleasant, and the obligatory stop at one of the coffee houses. But today we got a coffee and a show. It seems their air conditioning unit died spectacularly.

I didn't ride today, but I rode last night for the annual Anthem Moonlight Ride, here in Richmond, VA down at The Diamond (AA minor league baseball stadium), and cruises up and back on various roads that they close down. 8 miles or 15 miles... Parents, kids, grandparents, young & old, everybody from all walks of life. It's awesome and a lot of fun!!

No relief from the Central California heat wave. 82 miles round trip to North Fork with plenty of climbing & temps over 100° by the time I got home. My buddy Mike found a crack in his carbon bike's steerer tube last week so he rode his Motobecane Team Champion, I rode the Merckx Motorola.

Back from 4 days of riding in Colorado. Highlights included the RMNP Trail Ridge Rd over a 12K pass, Peak to Peak/St Vrain, and Left Hand Canyon in addition to a warm up ride farther north near the Wyoming border. 40% less oxygen can really be felt as my legs offered little torque vs spin.
If I had to do it over again, I'd bring a triple crank with a corncob(ish) cassette to have more fine choices in gearing on the low side. That would also offer a little more high end for the screaming descents (hit over 50 at least a half dozen times per the map my ride). The Anderson is a KOF machine, so posting it here for C&V...

A Relaxing Evening On The River
I rode my Fuji Royale 3-speed roadster conversion down along the Mississippi tonight, about an hour or so before sundown. It has been a hectic couple of weeks at work, and I needed a bit of R&R.
Sometimes a ride with some photo stops turns into a photo shoot with a bit of riding in between. This was one of those nights. Once I got down to the docks, among the pleasure boats and barge tugs, I was struck by how at-home this bike looks in these nautical surroundings.
It must be the combination of navy blue paint, bamboo fenders, and canvas bags that helps this bike I call "Toshi-san" blend in down on the waterfront.
I was soon lost in a creative trance as image after image appeared in my imagination, and I captured them one-by-one with my camera.
After shooting with the light on my way to the end of the dock, I turned around and shot a couple against the setting sun:
This last one had to be in black and white; I actually composed it that way in my viewfinder.
After this, I rode back up the hill and had a nice BBQ chicken dinner with my family - served with fresh-picked sweet corn. That's much better. I am now ready to tackle one more workday before the Labor Day weekend.
This river of ours... it always seems to deliver exactly what I need, even when I don't know exactly what that is.
Sometimes a ride with some photo stops turns into a photo shoot with a bit of riding in between. This was one of those nights. Once I got down to the docks, among the pleasure boats and barge tugs, I was struck by how at-home this bike looks in these nautical surroundings.
It must be the combination of navy blue paint, bamboo fenders, and canvas bags that helps this bike I call "Toshi-san" blend in down on the waterfront.
I was soon lost in a creative trance as image after image appeared in my imagination, and I captured them one-by-one with my camera.
After shooting with the light on my way to the end of the dock, I turned around and shot a couple against the setting sun:
This last one had to be in black and white; I actually composed it that way in my viewfinder.
After this, I rode back up the hill and had a nice BBQ chicken dinner with my family - served with fresh-picked sweet corn. That's much better. I am now ready to tackle one more workday before the Labor Day weekend.

Around town on the PR10.
Enjoyed riding the Motobecane out for cannoli and cappuccino this weekend, and had a blast with it en vacances last week:
