45 Years Ago: January 1979 in Bicycling magazine
Articles/columns included in this post are:
LETTERS
TECHNICAL Q and A
BICYCLE WORKSHOP "Lightweight Equipment"
The following article from this issue was included in a past post:
"All About Cranksets" (Equipment/Product Review (1978) All About 5/6-Speed Era Cranksets). The January 1979 issue contained only a continuation of the table of cranksets (Sugino through Zeus) .
As for "Clunkers Among the Hills" by Charles R. Kelly, if you want to see what many consider to be a seminal article about the bike that became the "mountain bike", go to the well and drink from the site of Repack Rider (Charlie Kelly's Website; https://sonic.net/~ckelly/Seekay/mtbwelcome.htm)
The site itself is a treasure trove of early mountain bike lore, so stay awhile and drink long and deep.
Otherwise, let me know if you'd like to see something else listed in the ToC and I'll add it in a reply to this post or as a link to a pdf.

Interesting book review about Henry Miller. He lived down Partington Ridge (Big Sur, Califonia) from our house. Here he's sitting in our yard talking with my wife Heidi's mother. Photos from about 1953. Jim Merz

The book review is fantastic, especially the surprise at the end! As I read it, I kept wondering if the cabby was referring to a different sort of cycle.

Given what Garmins or even Apple Watches do these days compared to the Casios in the ads, and adjusting for inflation, modern sports watches are not that bad a deal I guess.,

I wrote "Clunkers Among the Hills" while on the road with the Sons of Champlin (I was the roadie). Gary Fisher was then my roommate, and since he worked for Bicycling Magazine, he took it with him to the corporate offices in Emmaus. They bought it for $125. It was the first time I had been published.
Selling a magazine article was so easy, that I kept doing it. Eventually I published the first magazine for mountain bikers, the Fat Tire Flyer.
I used the formal handle "Charles R. Kelly" because at the time my father, Charles E. Kelly was still alive. Now I am Charlie Kelly for byline purposes.

Quite the family heirloom. Getting a Lee Marvin vibe from Miller, which makes me question whether I've ever seen photos of the man.

I bookmarked this page in my reading list and finally got around to it.
Reading the story about the cabbie and the Henry Miller fan, I just knew what was coming (re: the motorcycle ending). But he keeps them in his living room??
And this was interesting to see ... by '79, Lawee wasn't the only importer of Motobécane:
