18 vs 20 for a 29er

Hi guys,

I`ve bought a biger frame size and I really need your opinion. So, these are the details:

Me: 1,78 m / Inseam: 81 cm

Frame size: 20" (according to size tables, I should have bought 18"). The frame has the bottom bracket quite low for a 29er (like a 26) so I have a few cm over the top tube.

Bike came with a 10cm stem (too long for me) and now I have replaced it with a 6cm one and 7 rise. But .. I still cannot find my position and I have wrist pain (I feel like I am putting all my weight on my hands). Tried different setups (saddle, pipe, handlebar) but had the same result.

Now, I was looking at the 18" frame size (same model) and the differencies do not seem to be that BIG. I am attaching a picture with both sizes (18" and 20"). Bike is an ALL MOUNTAIN model, Full suspension, 130 mm.

What do you think ? Should I sit more comfortable on the 18" frame size ?

Thank you in advance for your opinions.

Alex

I'd have never put you on a 20", but I can't promise that the 18" will cure all your ills. Especially without seeing the bike and seeing the bike with you on it.

For the record, I'm about 184 cm, and a 19.5" is just about right for me. I tried a 21.5" once, thinking I needed it for my leg length (pretty damn long), but it turns out I can control the bike better with a smaller frame and a handlebar much lower than I would have thought. And just about all of the good riders I know who are about your size are riding 17.5" and 18.5" frames.

Thank you for your reply. I start to believe that I actually needed a 17" frame but this model had only 16-18-20 versions.

I would have also never have put you on a 20" frame. I'm taller than you (1 inch longer inseam) and I can't ride a 20" frame. I can barely ride a 19.5" frame. I think the 18" frame would be better for you.
