622 and 559 Rims: What Size Tires?

So I have some good modern Gatorskin tires that are marked as 28-559 but also as 26 x 1 1/8. These two measurements don't jive with the Sheldon chart, nor with any other but they fit on my MTB rims just fine.

But the nominal fractional size is odd. Fractional width callouts on tires are customarily preserved for those intended for straight-sided rims, and decimal widths for "crochet" rims. I'd be surprised if your tire isn't for crochet rims, as small as it is. Even in the old British system, there were no wired-on tires as small as that, so I'd chalk it up to an error of the mold-maker. Should probably properly read 26 x 1.125"

Sure, the 559 rim is the traditional mountain bike size. And 28mm is as close as need be to 1⅛" (it's usually rounded to 28.6mm.)

Edit: Now that I've looked again biketiresdirect has them.

Conti's website has the same weird "26 x 1 1/8" notation. For shame! https://www.continental-tires.com/bi...yres/gatorskin
