Odd response from pedestrian on trail
Went for a brisk ride on a local rails-to-trails this morning. As is my habit, I slow down and ring my bike bell upon approaching pedestrians from behind. I have one of those classic sounding bells - Brrring-brrring. So I sounded my bell as I approached one gentleman and darn if he didn't pull out his cell phone and say "hello?" He then chuckled and smiled sheepishly as I passed.

The gent had a quick wit and smart sense of humor. Nothing wrong with that. Most youngsters couldn't correlate the Brrring-brrring bell sound with a phone. Freesound.org - "old telephone bell (british version).wav" by FreqMan

Of course he might have set Brrrng-Brrrng as his ring tone. Given that nobody does that anymore, he'll always know if it's his or not (or a bicycle).

I was on our local Rail-to-Trails path and was coming up behind a woman on her bike. I sounded my bell and I saw her look down but she stayed in the middle of the lane. I was pretty much right behind her now so I rang again. She looked down again and I could tell she was wondering what was going on with her bike. I said Hello and rang again and now she knew where the noise was coming from. We both had a good laugh as I continued on past her.

Interesting situation and probably a genuine reaction to a false cue. In another context, many of us have turned our heads when a child's voice shouts Mom/Dad, and quickly realize it wasn't our child.
With respect to cellphones the creepiest false cue is "the phantom vibrate".

At least the other gentleman didn't begin a conversation on the "dead line" phone....

I does seem our gadgets can get in our heads and "manipulate" us. We may well be "summoning the demon".

Funny! I like how you slowed for pedestrians. I do that, too. When I get no response to the bell, I toot the Airzound horn. I don't need the pedestrian to move, I just want to let them know I'm coming.

A friend and I were at the beach and both of us had to keep our pagers with us or check them every ten minutes. We went for a walk along the beach with our pagers clipped inside our suits and had stopped to talk to a couple of girls. My pager went off beeeep-beeeep-beep, and without even skipping a beat one of the gals looked down and said 'does it always do that when it gets excited?' Hah.

This is true from Tokyo
Bikes have the right of way on Tokyo sidewalks. Pedestrians just get out of the way for a bell.
