After some attempts, my favourite compromise now are the Schwalbe Smart Sam 44mm. They are more on the MTB side than most tires seen in this thread, but are good enough on road. My use of the bike is mixed (road to join trails, trails, sometimes muddy).

Hybrid cycling tires are at home on the street, road, or course. With confidence-inspiring tread and proven durability, these tires are prepared for where your journey takes you. Start Looking for Bontrager Hard-Case, Hard-Case Lite, or Hard-Case Ultimate models for Extra puncture protection.

This sounds like a sales call.

I'm running Continental Grand Prix Urbans on my Giant Escape. These are 35mm and feature Continental's Black Chili compound. I have around 500 miles on them and have been very pleased. Good handling, even in wet weather. I only ride pavement for now but packed dirt/crushed gravel looks like a lot of fun to me. I'd like to try a 38 or 40mm slick-ish tire next time around. The Maxxis Velocita and the Panaracer Gravel King are on my short list for now.

mine has 40mm WTB Nanos. I got them on a MTB & since I replaced them on the MTB with wider 2.25" MTB tires, I'd figured I'd try them out on the hybrid. they come in quite handy when I want to venture off trail, on smooth unpaved trails, or paved trails w/ the family. they are pretty beafy. thought I had a tread photo but I guess I don't. they have a solid center strip but lots of texture. I wouldn't use them for commuting, ever. too slow

for a while I was really enjoying these Michelin Protek. also 40mm but run much wider. so wide, in fact, I couldn't fit them unless they were 50% of their max rated pressure

for pavement w/ rare unpaved sections, I previously put these on my wish list: Schwalbe Big Apple because of reviews I've read here

I have the WTB Nanos in 27.5x2.1 on another bike (and have had the 29x2.1 before) and they ride pretty nicely and have tremendous grip off the road. But you definitely do get tread squirm and some rumble from them on pavement, which reduces their efficiency. I think they're a great 50/50 on/off road tire, depending on how "off the road" your 50% off road gets.

What is the size of your 40s, rumrunn6 ? Are they a true 40mm? I do like how tall they usually are...many tires form sort of a squished "C" in cross section, but Nanos are usually more like a tall "U" when inflated.

- wow, yours are wide!
- mine, as it shows in my photo, are 700x40. which as we know are interchangeable with a "29er" MTB, which is what I took them off of
- when looking at pics in my library I didn't see one with the caliper but I can give them a measure tonight & check what pressure I decided on. if I remember correctly, from when I took the studded tires off this year, I think I wrote 70psi on the sidewall in white marker because my eyes have a hard time reading the embossed text. & I believe I run them at 60psi rear, maybe 55psi front. I'm roughly 225lbs & they don't squish too much at those pressures. I notice a hum of course, but I don't find them squirmy

found some other pics, maybe they don't have a center line, but appear to when they're rolling

on the MTB I took them from

Re: "tread squirm", I'm referring to the "clawing" of the tread you can hear at lower speed maneuvers. Like climbing a sharp hill on pavement or during slower turns. You can hear all the individual tread elements scratch and move around as they grab and let go of the pavement. You're right -- these don't have a true center line, but they have a "virtual" one with those middle tread elements that seem to come together as the tire rolls. The Vittoria Mezcal, a pair of which I also have, has a very similar tread design. The Nanos definitely predate the current Mezcal, but their performance is pretty similar. Vittoria offer them in several 27.5" and 29" sizes, and also the 700x35 size...but not a 700x40 unfortunately.

The Vittorias:

I finally replaced the OEM Hutchinson's (20yo) with a set of Continental Ultra sports for my "performance hybrid".
The largest I could fit were 700x25s.....

Recently swapped the Schwalbe G One Speeds 30c that came stock with my Roadlite for the new Pirelli P-Zero Race 28c. The difference in speed is staggering. Bit harsher ride of course, but that was an expected trade off.

bought some tires for my Domane, but decided I wanted to stay tubeless, so the Pirelli P Zero Race Classics in 28mm went on my wife's Trek FX4.

I just purchased and upgraded a 1995 Specialized Hardrock and put Smart Sams on it. I have yet to hit the singletrack with it. I do like how they respond the surface streets in my neighborhood.
