I mount mine underneath my basket. It won't fall off because it's so light and velcroed in. It's hidden so it doesn't look ugly, and it preserves the downtube and top tube for a frame bag or bottle cage like they're meant to be used.

I haven't mounted my pump on my bike in decades. It might get stolen.

Is worried about a little pump looking ugly, yet has a massive basket that doesn't match the color scheme of the bike?

No, those are my words. Their words "...I mount mine underneath my basket. It won't fall off because it's so light and velcroed in. It's hidden so it doesn't look ugly,".

I was questioning why someone worries about an "ugly" bike pump, yet doesn't worry about an arguably ugly basket that undeniably doesn't match the rest of the bike.

How would you recommend I paint my basket?

I don't care if you do or not. It was just odd to me that you'd care enough to hide a small "ugly" pump under a monstrous basket that doesn't match. For someone who cares about how their bike looks, there's bigger fish to fry there.

so the problem with my basket is that it's too big?

No, a basket that doesn't match the bike's color scheme is the issue (for someone like you that cares what their bike looks like). The basket being big just accentuates the color mismatch. Either get matching parts, or stop caring what your bike looks like. Those are the only options.

On the other hand, a brightly colored or garish-looking bike is easier to see and less likely to be run over.

You seem hung up on my the looks of your bike by calling a pump "ugly" and trying to hide it from view, and then asking how to paint an unmatched basket, yet you're now warming up to a "garish-looking" bike. You really need to sort out your feelings about the aesthetics of your bike, and take a stance on it one way or the other. I have nothing more to add to this conversation.

Honestly my feeling is not so much that it is ugly than that it is clearly not part of the bike and liable to being stolen.
