All Treks were built with English thread (1.37" x 24tpi). There's a remote chance that some may have been re-tapped to Italian (36mm x 24tpi) by a bike shop to work around stripped threads, but odds are the English thread Superbe BB will work fine.

@JohnDThompson - Thanks, and great news! I was planning on using the Superbe Pro- group on it. Now I will have to dig it out and start ..... no wait I already have a project! At least I have a frame for the BB! It was a "oh by the way, you might be interested in this" COOP purchase.

@luker had one. Look at post #14 in this thread:
https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...teel-trek.html

Also note the general sense that even 10yrs ago the Trek was not appreciated and in demand as it is today. A decade makes the difference, I guess.

Since we’re on the topic of IDing how can I verify this Trek frame indeed is a 770?

The Serial Number is 146860, which according to Vintage Trek is a 770 produced in 1984.

What throws me off is that the color (orange) and decals are like a 560.

That has the Trident (Tange) fork crown and the distinctive headtube lug.....this is what you are looking for in ID'ing the 760/770/170 frame. As for paint and decals etc, Trek was outside the brochure most of the time from what I've seen. You could custom order per customer/dealer request. That's a beauty.

Edit: Your Pro Series is '86. As for the '84 braze date, many of those frames were used through '85/6. My '86 Pro Series has a mix of componentry and a Dec '84 braze date.

Very! That is a top shelf frameset that the 760/770/170 shared. There is a high demand for these classy racers.

still have the 170. And not interested in parting with it yet...but I'll let John be the first in line (its a 56).

The "mentions" feature sucked me in.

Celebrate with me! I can't believe that on a whim, I did a search on ebay for a 760 fork. Found one for a 770, Vintage Trek says they are the same fork as the 760!. Slightly over 2 hours left with one bid. Oh you say, was the steerer the right length? Hell yes, it came off a 60 cm frame which mine is! Price? Less than $50 shipped! I just can't believe it!. Oh yeah, it is in my area too.

@OlsCOOL - Thanks! Glad I didn't pull the trigger for the Soma fork at nearly $100 more!

Funny, I just told someone else to have "patient, grasshopper!" It paid off.

Hopefully not. There must be a good number of these frames hiding out across the countryside.

While I'd pay nearly any asking price for a 170..... you'd regret selling it at some point. Pictures would make my day

So when I meet him tomorrow, I will ask. My suspicion is that he parted it out. I think I captured my discoveries in looking for a replacement. I was not able to find a reasonable priced fork with steel threaded steerer, Maybe my criteria was too constrained because I didn't consider threadless. The biggest challence was finding one with 38 mm offset. Most road forks are in the 43 mm range with some less.

I went through the box of stuff last night, that was hanging on the frame. I know I ask JohnDThompson about BB size. I was interested in understanding what was there. Surprise, it is a Stronglight Competition BB in 1.37x 24!. How often does that show up? Now I need to examine the races to see if it is worthy of reuse. The Shimano BB 36x24 I have for the Pinarello has a single spot of pits where the bike sat for who knows how long with water in the BB. I need to find a replacement.

OK so now the 760 is getting the Superbe mostly Pro group of parts. It will be awhile before I get it together or are you saying do it now and find out how it rides?! Crappy rattle can black frame, hot pink fork with Suntour Superbe Pro parts and tubulars! Sleeper?
