The bike gods (and science gods, but that's another story) are smiling on me today. Saw an add on CL for a 80's Schwinn bike sans wheels for a lark, so I checked it out for a flip. I couldn't make out what it was from the photos (I was thinking Premis or Prologue) but it turned out to be a Peloton! I'm interested in any information you guys have. The headbadge has a stamp that looks like 0526, which I guess means it was built on the 52nd day of 1986.
The woman selling it was about my age (mid 20's), moving back to the Midwest. She had brought the bike with her here to Boston but couldn't ship it home. It was equipped with really nice Campy/Ofmega wheels but she wouldn't sell them. She had it set up as a single speed unfortunately, so no derailleurs. The frame has no rust but lots of shiny parts where the paint is gone. It has the last remnants of a Columbus decal. One downside is the fork seems to be not original as it has two eyelets and no pretty crown.
The best part was the components. Cinelli stem/handlebars, Shimano 600 DT shifters, Campy brakes and pedals (one missing a dustcap), and a Sugino 75 crankset. Also some interesting Dia-Compe aero levers. I think I will part it out but keep the frame for a rider (it's pretty light, although it didn't feel that way walking it home the 3 miles from Brighton to Brookline.
Here's some pics

Incognito Campy Hub
Found this at my favorite second hand store... what looked to be a mtn wheel tucked in a corner. Sunrims Rhyno Lite 26" Rim w/ a 7spd Sachs 12 freewheel on this campy hub, 126mm spacing. My best guess Victory or Triomphe. Buttery smooth. $12. Exciting... Never had much campy stuff in my wanderings/findings. What's good to polish these weird spots out of aluminum anyone? Thanks,

^Looks like there is a clearcoat over the hubshell. Either chemically strip or sand it off with very fine sandpaper. Then it should polish up splendidly.

Today I picked up this 1982 Fuji Del Rey. It is in need of most of the usual consumables. The paint seems to be in remarkably nice condition. It has those neat Fuji pantographed parts, too. Too bad it is way too small for me, so it is destined to be a flip bike.

79 Schwinn Traveler Xtra Lite
My local scrapyard has been quiet for the last month, until today when I spied this Schwinn. I gave it a washing and some air in the tires, and it's ready to ride. Appears to be a Japanese Schwinn, with alloy cranks and stem, and Shimano 400 derailleurs. I can't figure out why they put steel rims on it, if they wanted to call it "Xtra Lite." But I have an extra set of alloy wheels which I will put on it, which should make it "Relatively Lite." It had a working "Schwinn Approved" generator and lights, which I've already removed and I'm planning to sell on Ebay. Looking at Schwinn sites, it appears to be a 78 or 79 model, very similar to a Le Tour and a World which have both gone through my garage.

"Barn Fresh"?
When vintage auto collectors score a relatively untouched car that has been stored away in a barn or garage for 40 or 50 years, they call it "barn fresh." I think C & V bike gatherers need their own term. "Barn fresh" is already taken. What shall it be? Garage fresh? Dumster fresh? Dump fresh? Basement fresh?

Shed Fresh.
Schwinn xtra-lite is simply 1020 High Tensile. Nice score! Should be a comfy ride and fun platform to tinker on. The alloy wheel swap will significantly improve it. Just economically swap out the steel parts and it'll become 'lite'.

That's the same tubeset as my '81 Le Tour. If the geometry is the same it'll be an awesome ride. Very stable handlers, those. I did a 700c conversion on mine and it's a very nice accelerating frame. Not super stiff, but not wiggly like my Fillet-brazed bike.

It is shocking what people will throw out, isn't it?
The scrapyard has been my go-to bike source for quite a few years. This year it has yielded this Schwinn Traveler, Peugeot and Gitane 10-speeds, 2 Trek mtbs (one is a beautiful USA-made bike and the other is under construction, needing fork and headset), a GT Outpost mtb, and a pre-Xmart Mongoose mtb. The scrapyard has also been my source for most of the parts to repair these bikes. The owner is a friend and happy to take five or ten bucks for what I drag out of the pile, or we barter for aluminum cans. I always return the leftover parts to his scrap pile. Sometimes I pay real money for other finds: $30 for a 12" Craftsman miter saw, $10 for a Proform eliptical trainer, missing the control panel. Life is good in a small town, where you can get to know many people!

Which light set did it have?? If it's the square headlight and fishtail tail light, I'll take it?? I love those old gadgety lights, even though they're heavy and make you poke a hole in the paint for a ground. Send it my way!.,,,,BD

Had a successful outing today checking out 2 CL prospects.
First, a 93 Bianchi Boardwalk, a small 16.5" hybrid. Came with a Silca Pista floor pump too. The seller told me it was ridden by his wife all of 3x in all these years. They had a number of bikes over the years, but now too old to ride. The bike was so clean, I didn't haggle over the price. These are the seller's photos....note the lugged frame, made from Tange/Bianchi Superset2 tubing. I take it to mean Tange 2.
Last, another 93 hybrid (ladies) bike. A Raleigh USA CT200. This one is the 'flip' side of the coin...bombastic, craptastic! Left outside for how long, I don't know, but the only part of the saddle left was the shell. Tires dry rotted to dust, rusted stem and bar, seized Rapid Fire shifters, rusted cables, chain, cassette, etc. But surprisingly, the frame looked remarkably good. Paint is British racing green, little fading, decals minimal fading too. Scratches evident, but I've seen worse. This is a 'Technium' constructed ladies frame, where only the top and down tubes are Al. Seat tube is part of the steel triangle in this model. I don't know why, but I had to buy it, maybe for the funky construction. I offered $10, it was accepted. Sorry no pics, I tore into it as soon as I got it out of the trunk. Luckily, no stuck post or stem!

I oversee building demolitions, and this bike was in one that was coming down; so I rescued it. It’s a Schwinn Suburban, I believe a ’72 10 speed.
This is my first Schwinn since I was 13 and proudly road the He!! out of my lemon yellow Continental. I haven’t restored a bike in a while, and this is not a bike that I would have been looking for, but I’m going to give it my best shot. Finding a seatpost is going to be a challenge I feel.

Picked up this Schwinn Traveler at a local swap meet for 10 bucks. Came with brand new cables and Panaracer Pasela tires. Not sure what I want to do with it though. How can I get the rust off the chrome parts?
