Hello

I know about Tern's Cargo Joe which has 26 inch wheels front and rear, and Yuba's Spicy Curry which has a 26" wheel in the front… but is there such a things as a long tail, folding bike that sports 20" wheels front and rear so that it'd take less place at home?

As an illustration, a mamachari from Japan.

Sears Tote Cycle or Cycle Tote not sure which way is correct. They break in half so fit in small places. I have 3. 2 are 3 speeds and one a coaster brake. Sears sold them for about 10 years. First ones were built in Austria and the last were made by Huffy. The last one I got was a Huffy and the one in the pictures is Austrian built. Roger

There is a sliding system on the main tube to make it shorter plus you can take the front wheel off..

I remember I found a extra cycle like atatchment for 20" wheel bikes made for recumbents to make them into longtailed recumbents. I was going to put it on a folder but forgot about it..

If you add it to a detatchable bike instead of a folder it is easyer to lift and store (two parts).

I have a half finished homemade longtail in the shed, 20". Maybe I should dig it out and atatch it to the Mule or my homemade Granny e-bike.

+1) buy an Xtracycle add on kit, then have a frame builder modify it to fold . Since you got plenty of dosh , go for it..

The bolt on is not for 20" wheels. It is made for bikes with long seat and chain stays.

The Edgerunner has a 20" rear wheel so maybe a custom made bolt on thingy and use the bags and rails from the edgerunner?

Are you sure you need a longtail? Take a look at the bike behind the BF in the picture, it is the Mule. Old steel detatchable bike, much like the R20. New fork and added a Nexus 7 w a coaster brake plus a cable splitter. I am in the process of installing a folding stem, the one in the picture is detatchable, much like on the NWT.

Modifyed with a welded on block on the head tube to take a Brompton luggageblock. It also has a Dahon front rack that can take full size bags or baskets. Both systems can be used at the same time.

The rear rack can take 25 kg. If you put two baskets in the rear you can also put cargo on top of it, like a huge backpack. Not sure you can put much more on a longtail unless we are speaking long items.

A friend borreowed the Mule to bring her stuff back from my sons cabin in the mountains. I snapped some photos. Still possible to carry much more:

Thanks for the input.

I don't personally need a long tail at this point. I was just wondering why no manufacturer offers one, considering 1) 20" wheels are shorter to the ground so those bikes are more stable to carry kids and 2) folding bikes are better suited for people living in appartments. The success of mamachari in Japan shows there's a need for that kind of bike.

Thanks for the link. Not sure it can withstand carrying one or two kids safely, though.

For some reason, BF didn't think it'd be useful to make the Haul-a-Day foldable, while it thinks the Pakit is a good idea.

I once read that as you go from a single bike to a tandem bike you increase the stress on the bike by ten fold. Even though the bike is just carrying twice the people. I am not an engineer to verify that but I would not argue with the logic.

With the much longer frame and some people's affinity to pushing the limits I fully understand Bike Friday not making the Haul-a-Day folding. The folding bits on a Bike Friday are stout but add another 300 pounds to the frame---some people have a lot of stuff---and then think about the stresses of going off curbs or through potholes...

The bike in that picture has a green/orange toptube. That is where you can shorten it to be no longer than a regular bike. They say it can be placed on a regular bikerack on a bus.

The packit and the Haul-a-day are two totally different bikes and for different use, I would not expect the H to be foldable. It would be wider and much more difficult to carry. With cable splitters it could maybe be detatchable and I think it is a better option. Those who need smaller has to look at bike and trailer.

A folded bike is not smaller, just a different shape. A detatchable bike can be splitted in two and carryed separately or stored in more than one place.
