1985 Raleigh Kodiak Touring Worth?
Looking at buying a 1985 Raleigh Kodiak Touring bike, good condition and ready to go. Anyone have any idea about how much this bike is worth?

Impossible to say without pictures, especially of the drive side. A location helps as well since markets vary.

I believe that is the mid-level Raleigh touring bike. I saw one posted in Chicago last year for $250 in good condition and I thought that was a good price. Although different markets vary A LOT.

Bizarre choice of handlebars for a touring bike. Otherwise a nice bike and components. I'd ask the seller "is this a touring bike or a wannabe fixie?" as a negotiating tactic.

Don't mention the wrong bars...no need to insult anybody. That bike; rehabbed; with period correct parts will sell for $350+ in some markets. Maybe $250 average markets. As is (if it all works and good shape) $150 tops. If you get it; see if the seller has the original levers and bar...........

Serious rack back there, but the bars are a joke. Easy enough to set proper, with the right parts. I'd go $200, if the seller has the right parts to put back on it. If not, about $150

Incorrect handlebars (minor), upgraded rear rack, Wrong rear derailleur (major). Check the seat stays where they attach to the seat tube, they can crack there. An excellent bike from the touring boom of the mid '80s. Was a VERY close second to the Portage but with the easier to find 27" tires. Wouldn't part with mine for less than 650 at a minimum.

Those are nice bikes. Triple chainrings & cantilever brakes. In real good condition seller could ask $300. Buyer could get it for less. It all depends on condition.

One more question for the group, when it comes to wrong derailleurs, how much does this affect worth and/ or performance?

As long as the parts are the same brand, vintage and relatively close to the group quality level; you should be good to go with no effect on value. To me, mixing brands is the biggest no-no.

Especially front derailleurs- if whats on there works, then thats what is most important. Front derailleurs in the friction shifting age are incredibly similar in terms of shift quality. The nicer ones are typically just lighter weight and have a better finish.
If it were a different brand, meaning Campy derailleur on an otherwise all Shimano bike, then that would annoy me and I would want to change it which would cost $20 or so.

If you're selling it as a scruffy daily rider, expect $150-200. A C & V buyer may want more period-correct parts (and a full cleaning and tune-up) to pay the upper range prices.

I love the Kodiak. It was my first 'grownup' bike. I did three Lake County Bike Treks for the American Lung Association, and did a lot of riding on it. It was comfortable and pretty bomb proof. Except, I could flex the frame on uphills enough to dump the chain. I really miss that bike.

Does anyone know if a 700c conversion works with this bike and how big of a tire will it take?

Nice bike. Nice shape They want $150 for it but I think the frame is a little small for me.

Seems like this is a standard price for many GW"s that think they have a decent bike.
Admittedly they can have good buys at this price. I would pass 9 out of 10 times.
