Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No, it looked like a normal coaster brake hub but he had a machined part to attach the anchor lever to. We didn't stop and look at it but I think that part was bolted on to the disk brake mounts. The organizer recommends tearing down the hub and using high temp grease.

Yeah my friend said it was a blast. You really have to think about what you're doing to avoid crashing. One of the magazine guys did it a few years ago and he broke his chain early on but was able to fix it. He said hammering to try and catch up was very challenging.

Ah I didn't think about breaking chains, that could get bad since you lose your only brake too.

It's why I'm leery of riding fixed gear brakeless, despite how great the bikes look

Are you talking about the most outboard part of the hub? The hubs might have interchangeable endcaps for different axle types. A little bit of play is normal, at least from my experience.

They're just spacers, really.

Hub end caps are often swappable. Sometimes they screw on/off and sometimes they just push/pull on/off. They should have wrench flats if they're threaded, but finger-tight should be fine.

put cassette on with out washer and tightened the lock til it was finger tight. Cassette seemed to have a lot of play. Removed the cassette, added the washer and now the lock ring doesn’t reach the threads.

Datlas wins a gold star.

Everything is mounted and looks good. All I need is my LBS to torque everything down and I should be set.

Two questions:

1. I bought a chain to just run with these wheels. The cassette is 28t so will the chain length need to be different from my current chain. I believe current cassette is 34t
2. I put the front wheel on just to see how it looked and to make sure the hub wasn’t weird, (whyfi and abshipp had not responded yet. Wheel fit like a dream and no play so I am happy. Brakes are rubbing and I am assuming if I put my rear wheel on they would rub as well. What do I need to do about that? I am assuming it’s a simple fix. Super stoked!

IMO they look really clean, well made for 400 dollars. If they look this well, I can only imagine what reputable wheels look like.

I don't think so. It already works with a cog around that size, right? So there's a little more chain than you need, but if you're still using the other wheel with the 34t, I wouldn't bother changing the chain.

If you have flat mount calipers, loosen the mounting bolts till the calipers float, squeeze the brake lever, and with the lever held tight, tighten the bolts. That's supposed to re-center the caliper. It would be a pain to have to do that every time you swap the wheels, though.

Was hanging my bike back up and noticed this. I’m assuming it happened when I crashed but I never noticed until now. Wheel is straight, and the spokes all feel tensioned.

I plan on using my old wheels for gravel, but doubt I will be switching back forth on a weekly basis.
