Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think the last bike I had with horizontal dropouts was the Landshark which I sold in 1992, or so.
The old Schwinn has horizonal dropouts. Open cam skewers require a lot of tension to stay put, so I make sure to use traditional skewers. Easier to get enough tension.

It's a thought. For now, I'm just making it REALLY TIGHT.

I had spent some time Sunday with my new Park hanger alignment tool, and I was afraid I'd messed up the alignment again. So I put it up on the stand, checked the alignment, then noticed the wheel was closer to the NDS chainstay. Once I got the wheel properly aligned, the hanger alignment was spot on. And the shifting was back to the normal Campy *click* - *CLANK*. I don't understand why Shimano is *click*-*click* but Campy clanks. But it does.

Yeah, the Circuit's got 'em too. Chromed. But so far the Sante skewer seems to keep it in place. Shimano's hub lock nuts are crosshatched where they face the dropout. I'll have to check the White hubs on the Battaglin.

I have horizontal dropouts on my old Peter Mooney. Never had a problem with slippage until I got a set of Ksyrium Elites with their plastic QR hardware. It is not due to strength or weight in my case!

Slippage on the Schwinn didn't start until I put a modern (130mm) hub in the old (126mm) dropouts.

Pretty sure the Battaglin's dropouts were originally 126, based on the age. But they were widened before I got it.

After my bad experience with the Regal, I'm going to try the white Flite Flow I got from Pro's Closet, but if it doesn't work I'm going back to the Avocet. I realize when I'm on the bike nobody can see the saddle anyway. It's all just vanity.

Well, I just submitted my resignation to my job so I can finally say something about it.

At the end of this month Mrs. Abshipp and I will be moving to Greenville SC.

I'll be working in a bike shop

The SLT is chromed everywhere, has horizontal dropouts, and uses whatever open cam skewers come with Origin8 hubs. I'm somewhat surprised that I've never had slippage with them, but then again I put out like 700w max on a good day.

However, my MTB is QR in the rear and an open-cam skewer doesn't cut it so it's got a big and beefy steel internal cam skewer.

My steel roadbike is on the trainer and has horizontal dropouts.

I pulled the wheel out going up the Radio Tower climb on Zwift. The experience was doubly unpleasant but I fixed wheel and finished the climb.

Yeah, this bike was cold set to 130 too.

And I could've saved my money and had a soulless plastic bike five years earlier!

Plastic has soul! It just needs constant reinforcement.

Anyone know anything about siding? We need some. I want something that looks like vertical boards.

Aesthetically, I like the cement products like those made by Hardie, but vinyl is more economical, requires less maintenance, and can be more energy efficient. Vinyl can warp or melt from heat sources such as fires and grills. The cement products can crack or break.

Great. The local Hardie outfit is our first estimate. The shingly stuff doesn’t look too bad.

I once had a house with a Hardie Shake roof, and really liked it. There ended up being a class action over it because it would curl, but we never had that problem. The siding did not ever have that problem. They make some of there products not far from here, and one of my clients sells sand to them. They're products have more texture and look more like wood than vinyl does.

In my mind, the Hardie products are a "higher end" product. We have a couple of dormer style extensions on our roof, and the siding on those is Hardie, but the amount of it is very minimal.

I've never had vinyl siding though.

I thought everyone would like to see this

Six months in, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is still effective.

A company study of 46,000 participants showed that volunteers receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine remained more than 90% protected against symptomatic COVID-19 and were even better protected against severe disease six months after receiving the second dose. The vaccine is effective against virus variant B.1.351, first identified in South Africa, the company said.

The study did not reveal any serious safety concerns among 12,000 volunteers receiving the vaccine.
