1985 Miyata Pista - opinions on value?

Hi all -

Time has come to sell my 1985 Miyata Pista. I'm at the point of giving up on ever getting it on the track, and there are other pressing priorities that must be met. It's unfortunately time.

I have no idea what this thing is worth these days, so I'm soliciting opinions from you good folk. The bike is as close to mint as anyone is ever going to come. I bought it from a shop I worked at in 1985 (Alfred E. Bike when they had a St. Joseph location). All told, it has maybe 5-6 roller miles on it. Has never seen a track. Like ever. Bike is completely stock, as I bought it, except for tires and tape. Missing clips, though original MKS Sylvans. I think it's around 57 cm - they were sized strangely IIRC. Drilled to accept brakes, came stock that way, has a flip flop hub.

I'm about an hour from Trexlertown, so I'm hoping there's a more attentive audience locally. I'm just not sure what the market will bear with vintage steel frames.

Thoughts?

I appreciate your input.
Scott

You did not provide much detail about the bike.
Unless you find some specialist buyer my estimate is that a beginner track rider might pay up to $500. I see simiar bikes still being ridden on local velodromes,
I have similar high quality UK built bike from 1984 that is now in use as my indoor trainer.

Youre only an hour from T Town and spring is here, the banks at T Town are gentle. Why not take an intro class before you kick the ‘ol girl to the curb?

i have never lived that close to a track in my life save for physically re locating to both SD and The Springs in years past .

Treat yourself!

but the bike is quite lovely, really. $500 is not an unfair guess, as track bikes dont really “wear out” per se. Bikes like yours and my old Waterford still get used with regularity with out needing much of anything to stay relevant

I went to school in Kalamazoo. The store there was great. Don't know if you've heard, but Doug closed the shop a couple years ago.

I hear you, really I do. Here's the thing: 2008, wanted to sell but didn't, still dreaming of getting on a track. Didn't. 2014, cleaned the bike up, new Conti Sprinters. Wanted to get on the track, didn't. Now it's 2021. Last year wanted to get on the track, but Valley Preferred cancelled all the Try The Track sessions. And I'm feeling old for the first time, and I just don't know about trying to get on the track, again. It's not for lack of interest, just doesn't ever seem to happen.

i think I read something about it on-line. You could find obscure stuff there but it didn’t seem to translate well to the web, they were never the cheapest place in town and that’s important on the web.

True enough.

Dadgummit, I'm waffling on the Miyata now. Again. Valley Preferred has Try the Track sessions coming up...

I had an ‘85ish very similar. We don’t have tracks up here so I sold it. At 325.00 it was a steal and sold easily. The original owner must have stored it in his bedroom, just that clean. Ride that thing!

I know you were only asking for opinions on price, but I'd be interested in giving this bike a new home if you're still considering a sale. It would see plenty of time on a track with me. My dad gifted me this exact same model when I was a teenager – it was my favorite bike for a long time. I'm in my 40s now and the Miyata was stolen from our garage years ago. My dad passed away recently and I've been searching for a replacement recently and saw this post. Let me know if you want to chat about it. No problem if not. It's a beauty
