Rear Derailleur Compatibility
I've neglected to properly care for my Shimano 600 SIS rear derailleur and in attempting to clean it thoroughly of rust, have somehow damaged it so that the jockey wheel is constantly rubbing against the bottom of the cassette. There are other identical Shimano rear derailleur's for sale, but many look worn, or are too expensive for what I am hoping to spend. The front derailleur is also a Shimano 600. Could I use another Shimano model, 6-speed rear derailleur with the appropriate cage-length and mounting for my integrated bolting? Thanks for your responses,

Any 6, 7, 8, or 9 speed derailleur will work, excepting a few Dura Ace models.

If you are looking for older RD and use index shifting, a RD with a cable adjuster built in or a unit marked SIS is your best choice. Units prior to these may not index properly.

When reinstalling the derailleur, did you correctly engage the "B" screw with the tab on the derailleur mount?

It sounds like the jockey wheel bushing/bearings are kaput. I don’t know about the road bike derailleurs but many mtb models had replaceable jockey wheels.

Yes he did, and you replied w/ this. Which is wrong. Worn out pulley bearings would not make the pulleys suddenly become closer to the cassette cogs.

Ah, so you can use 'w/' and we cannot use 'brifters'.... Proper words, proper words 
It would be interesting to know how the derailleur was cleaned, because without (w/out) pictures it might indicate what kind of problem it is, and whether it is fixable.

I'm not right off seeing this problem being caused by damaging it during cleaning. I would first think this is simply an adjustment or installation issue . If so you could possibly experience the same adjustment or installation issue with a replacement derailleur. I would double check everything before condemning the unit.

In my experience, the bushings inside pulley wheels never wear out before the wheel itself develops tooth wear issues. Even then, not usually significantly worn out of round.
