The greatest tubes and wheels that were ever made: My old Fuji

Is what I was thinking to myself.
The story: A low level Fuji which sat in a time capsule for 30 years. I then found it, fell in love with how perfectly perfect it felt to ride and rode the wheels off of it for a few thousand miles.
After pushing my luck, neglecting and abusing this wheel set for years, today I finally changed out the original tubes and tires. I had been afraid (hey, I'm ridiculously superstitious) that I would lose "it" if I ever changed anything on this bike. The Fuji still rides perfectly and the "it mojo" is still with me!
Thank you to the Silver Star Butyl Tubes for giving way more than you ever should have. You were the greatest tubes ever made!

I sure do love riding this one! I have pushed my luck many times in the past, but REEEEALLY pushed my luck on these old tires. I just had to see how far I could push her. She never left me stranded, not once in all this time.

On a completely unrelated note, I haven't popped in for a while. Busy with life, bikes, beating thyroid cancer and travel. I sure hope that all of the "Usual Suspects" are still here and doing well. Scooper, Pastor Bob, TMar, Lamplight, Kurt in FL, Easthill, BigBossMan. I think of you guys often when I ride.

Hi Bob! So glad that you are here! It's nice to pop in. I've had a few Schwinn's come and go, but have managed to hang on to the special ones. I narrowed down my collection quite a bit and have the perfect balance of riding time with not too much time spent on maintaining them.
But it was the story of how ridiculously bombproof these old Japanese tubes were that really made me decide to visit and post.

I have the original pair of Schwinn Puff 27" tires that came on my '80 Traveler still in service. I use them as my winter stationary trainer tires. They are perfect for this. They show no cracking whatsoever.

That's great that you've found a good balance between riding and wrenching. I still tend to take in too many projects--- which end up clogging the shop as they wait and I dream. I have at least three builds bubbling in my head at the moment, two wheels with broken spokes which need repair, and a flat to fix. I'm also helping a teen from church with a MTB restoration, and have two church member's bikes which need service and adjustments.

All that makes it sound as if I don't ride much, but the last few months I've managed about 300 miles per month. I'm heading out shortly for a 60 mile gravel grind with a buddy. We'll be on our mid '80s Schwinn High Sierras. Cant wait!

Tubes can last a surprisingly long time if they don't meet a violent end -- they're protected from sunlight.

+1^^ I had a pair of 20+ year old Specialized Turbo VS tires almost instantly giving up the ghost after riding them a short distance from many years of non-use. The tire blew out during the night in my garage after the short ride, because the latex sidewalls were pretty much turned to dust, so the sidewall kevlar plies could not take the pressure...so a tube blew out through the sidewall. I was amazed how the Specialized latex tubes inside the tires still looked and felt brand new after I took the tires and tubes off the wheels.....
