Under the bar tape and exit at the stem. Ive done it with 4 bars that all had different bend shapes and shifting is perfect. Even with the current bars, Soma Hwy1 which are very compact, the shifting works just fine. The look is much cleaner which is nice.
I did have to route the cables out at the bottom of the hooks for 1 style of bar- it was a gravel bar with significant flare and therefore a very hard bend too. But I definitely tried a few different ways to make full under the tape routing work before I accepted it couldnt happen.

We briefly sold Mizutani Seraph Sprees at Bikecology during the early 1970s dock strike, when Nishikis and Peugeots were in short supply.

My UO-8 with barcon cables routed between the rack and the cylindrical Bellwether front bag.

Another option for crossover, which I did when Schwinn TwinStiks stem shifters first came out, is simply to shift the rear derailleur with the left lever and the front with the right.
