Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Really? That's quite a bit heavier than I imagined it would be.

I see carbon bikes and just assume they're somewhere around the 16lb mark. But I'm quite removed from that world in a lot of ways

I can't imagine riding a fixie on my usual roads. Too many ups and downs. On a normal ride I'm doing everything from <10 mph to > 30 on that one 8 mile stretch.

EDIT: Plus, you know, my weight - enhanced gravity = need for gears.

You know the frame is less than a quarter of the bike weight, right?

My Langster's around 19 pounds with bottle cages and pedals. That's mostly stock; upgraded the brakes to Campy Potenza with TRP levers.

The stock wheelset probably weighs about 2kg, maybe a little more. That's an easy pound to lose. Carbon touch points might get you another half pound. Then, a quarter-to-a-half pound on lighter crankset.

My aluminum road bike is around the 16 pound mark.

That's just my guess - I don't have an appropriate scale and I'm not curious enough to buy one to find out. If if were rim braked, I would assume that it would in that 16lb range, so I pad that figure a bit to account for the hydro system. I will say that it does feel pretty damn light to me when I heft it without the GPS, tail light/radar, headlight/video camera, and water bottles, though.

Probably more true for carbon, aluminum, or lightweight steel frames than what I ride. I get your point though.

Same here. I think I'm officially done with fixed gear though, even if it's 3-speed fixed.

Lol, every time I take the front bag off of the 716 I'm shocked at how light it feels. I bet that thing plus all the tools inside is 3-4lbs on it's own.

Since I probably won't get any framebuilding gear any time soon, I think I'll shift my focus.

My dream now is to track down one of these fabulous lighting fixtures:

I think my Gunnar is about 21 pounds and the frame is 4 pounds. I think 4 pounds is about what many steel frames weigh, aluminum and ti closer to 3 pounds.

This is when the best papers are written. Research 8pm-1am. Outline 1am-2pm. (half hour snack time) Writing 2:30-5am. Editing 5am-7. Set that alarm for 15mins before your first class, hopefully you didn't schedule any classes before 10

My Battaglin is 22 lbs, but that's with 6 lbs of MAX frame and fork.
